ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) said with reform of the Territory now the top priority, his Unity Government wants no conflict with the Governor and the United Kingdom (UK).

The Premier made the statement during a press conference yesterday, June 8, 2022, in which it was revealed that the ‘Framework for the Implementation of the Recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry Report and Other Reforms’ proposed by the Government of National Unity has been accepted by the Government of the United Kingdom.

Proposal accepted by UK Gov't

While defending the need to implement the reforms, Dr Wheatley said: "I am not going to focus on the past and what has happened in the past, I think every day gives us a new opportunity to improve what we think needs to be improved.

“It was very clear previously that the relationship between the elected Government and the Governor and the United Kingdom was not as strong as it should be, and I am committed to making sure that it is strong in the best interest of the people of the Virgin Islands," he added.

According to Dr Wheatley, the way forward means one of collaboration with the UK government in the spirit of partnership.

“For us to do what we need to do, we need the support of the United Kingdom Government and we need the support of the people of the Virgin Islands. So I don't want to see conflict in this particular area, I want to partnership and collaboration,” he added.

Dr Wheatley has in the past criticised the so-called partnership between the VI and the UK as being only suited to the best interests of the UK.

Governor pleased with commitment of Gov't

Meanwhile, Governor John J. Rankin, CMG said he was pleased with the commitment of the Unity Government on the way forward.

“I am pleased the Government of National Unity has made its firm commitment to carry out far-reaching reforms, including going beyond the CoI Report, to fix the failings of governance. I welcome the detailed plan the Government has set out to implement the CoI recommendations.”

Governor Rankin said the Premier and Government of National Unity have shown the will and commitment to improve governance in the VI and therefore it is right that elected officials should have the opportunity to implement the CoI recommendations.

Very good Honorable Premier. Diplomacy is critical in these times and the UK appreciates that. BUT don’t ever forget that the UK has their agenda and the queens interest to protect. We are still a colony of theirs. Yes, a colony. Don’t be like the democrats in the US using cute words like undocumented workers when they are actually illegal aliens. Keep the interest of the BVI and its people as a priority going forward. Greater self determination is the way forward for us. Let’s begin that discussion with the people asap. ????????

Hello, this is bad for tourism on a whole and our public image. Fix your problems in your own house and stop looking at the UK. We would be moving to independence as soon as we have steady, consistent and reliable people to run the place.

SAME HERE HONOURABLE PREMIER . WE THE PEOPLE OF THE BVI DONT WANT TO SEE CONFLICT OF INTEREST IN BVI EVEN FOR LITTLES THINGS AS CATERING , WE DONT WANT TO SEE MEMEBERS OF CERTAIN CLUBS THINKS THAT THEIR ARE PART AND PARCEL OF THE BVI GOVERNMENT, WE DONT WANT TO SEE IMPARTIALITY AND MORESO WE DONT WANT TO SEE THE HIGHEST OFFICE OF THE LAND ON A BASKETBALL COURT - WE MUST SHOW RESPECT AND DIGNITY IN OUR GOVERNMENT . BVI IS PROBABLY THE ONLY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WHERE LEGISLATURE AND ELECTED HONOURABLE OFFICIALS CONDUCT ITS COUNTRY BUSSINESS ON A BASKETBALL COURT. THAT OFFICE AT ALL TIMES SHOULD BE GIVEN SOME SORT OF INDIVIDUALITY.

That should have been the government's posture from the beginning. We were supposed to use what we had to get what we wanted.

There is no partnership existing with the UK, only a total takeover, so stop kidding yourselves my people, the time as many of us feared has come. The majority of us who did not want this and were never even allowed to take a vote were not considered because they came down here to do major damage to us without a care in the world what we felt or thought. Welcome to being part of the new world order.

Premier Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley stayed the UK was a champion of democracy. Really!!! Was Dr. Wheatley disingenuous in the past about the UK and is he disingenuous now? Has he evolved because he has his hand on the colonialist mouth? Is he a chameleon, an opportunist? Is this performative theatre? Is he stepping and fetching for the UK.

The UK is a champion of democracy. It may champion democracy in the UK but it surely did not and is not championing it the colonies, including currently with the OTs. Does anyone believe colonialism (not even mentioning slavery) was a democratic institution? If you do, I’m looking out my window from the 313 floor from a high rise building in Road Town and seeing a green mule flying around Road Harbour. Has the Premier look at the democratic deficiencies in the BVI 2007 constitution? Curious comment.

It is glorious that the Premier is making an effort to mend fences with Governor John Rankin, CMG. Nevertheless, when will Premier Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley, R-7 and MoF, going to mend his at best lukewarm relationship with the BVI/VI people? Does the BVI people matter or they are only good for voting? Who is advising the Premier? Who are his speech writers? Both groups need to huddle. The Unity Government made a monumental proposal on addressing the CoI recommendations but the Premier and the transitory Unity Government did not have the common courtesy to brief the territory, the people. They diss the people. The BVI has a pseudo representative democracy but that does not mean the people should be kept in the dark and we should not be. The Unity Government must learn from the missteps of the past.

I don’t think some of you understand what’s happening here. The premier doesn’t have a choice. It’s comply or suspend the constitution and accept direct rule. I think y’all don’t understand it’s either he bows or the role of premier doesn’t exist anymore. Y’all seem to forget that the uk owns y’all. You want to stunt with your uk passport well guess what this is the cost. Nothing ain’t free in this world didn’t your mama tell you ?

I agree Hon. Premier. Diplomacy is the way to go. We need the UK help. It is clear we are unable to do it on our own. Dont mind those people who out there shouting we dont need the help. They only trying to cover up their corrupt behaviour.

Putting yourself in danger to defend your people and country. I can tell you're not a very good coreball leader. If you don't stand for something, you're just a puppet.
