‘I don’t tell lies’ – Hon Julian Fraser RA
He was speaking on Sunday May 17, 2015 at the VIP’s Fifth District rally which featured the main speaker, VIP’s candidate for the Fifth District Zoe J. Walcott-McMillan.
“People talk about me. Somebody say what you see is what you get. Maybe you don’t see enough of me. But trust me, the little of me that you see this is all you’re gonna get…straightforward. I don’t tell lies,” he said.
He said that earlier that he day he met some people from the Latino community and that they had some questions that were dear to their hearts. “The natural thing for a politician to do was to tell them what they want to hear. Not Fraser. Fraser told them the truth. The truth will always set you free,” he said.
According to Honourable Fraser, persons in his district are telling him that his opponent in the Third District Kevin ‘OJ’ Smith, the NDP candidate, went into their homes last year and promised them the moon…”delivered nothing!”
“So what do you think they are going to do now? Honesty is the best policy. I am not going to promise you anything because promises are a comfort to a fool.”
He said the Premier of the territory Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith can make promises because he is in a position to deliver. “No one else can, because it has to be cleared by him and you are not sure what he is going to tell you. But I don’t go around giving people promises because I don’t know what I am going to meet when I get in there,” he said.
We are not going to stop projects
Honourable Fraser said the VIP once elected will not stop projects for the sake of stopping them and that the VIP has a record and it is there to be seen.
“When we left office in 2003 we had completed documents, working drawings, ready to go to bid, when the NDP came in they scrapped them and had to start everything over. It cost the Government $3 million,” he said.
He said in 2007 when the VIP took office they met a hole in the ground but they did the responsible thing and continued the project. “When they came into office it was a building standing with a roof on it…windows, and a contractor with a contract in his hand, signed, financed to complete the building,” he said.
You didn’t build anything
“So when you see them taking credit ‘oh we built the hospital’, you didn’t build anything. You gave a contractor a contract for $64 million to build a $100 million hospital and all you had financing for it was $33 million,” he said.
Honourable Fraser stated that when the Virgin Islands Party came in it did not borrow a dime but went to the Consolidated Fund to finish the project.
