ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Chairman of the Virgins Islands Festival & Fairs Committee Mr Dirk L. Walters said moving forward the Committee is looking to have a better relationship with the media, as it pertains to how coverage of Emancipation Festival events is done.

Mr Walters was at the time appearing as a guest on the July 31, 2023, edition of Talking Points on ZBVI 780 AM.

“Basically, in a nutshell, what we want to do going forward is have conversations regularly with the media and say listen we would like to know your intent for specific events.”

He continued, “What would you like to do? Let's see how we can service or facilitate your request and have that conversation,” he added.

Walters referenced that in other countries if 25,000 tickets were sold out of 30,000 then a livestream would be possible for that event.

VIF&FC looking to engage with media

He added that if he can watch an event live before the events start, he would rather watch it at home rather than purchase tickets.

“I don’t really believe in it [livestreams] unless in certain instances, recording for sure, so it can be rebroadcast at another time… or pay-per-view,” he added.

He called for the media to engage the Committee and work with them on the local events.

Recently, local media house JTV was prevented from streaming the 2023 Prince & Princess Show.

The Miss BVI Pageant Committee which is a Sub-Committee of the VIF&FC has also indicated that it will be prohibiting live streaming of its 2023 show.

why would I come to an event when I can stay in my house and watch the event for free

Let the broadcast company look their own content and stop free loading

If the shoe was on the other and those broadcasters had any event; they will not for some come and broadcast their events

Go out and support the festival

The early birds tickets was canceled even though y'all carried it from $100 to $140 showing that y'all is not working with the people. Enough tickets would have been sold to cover every cost. But a good percentage of the people ain't going to pay no $40 a night for 5 nights.

There's a lot more to attending a show live than the actual performance. The value is being literally there, with other people right beside you and the performer in front of you in a tangible way. Otherwise concerts as an event would have disappeared in the last decade.

Its not all about you Dirky. How about the sick, the old, the shutting, and those over seas who support us, who love us and who we want to show our culture and market the BVI to.. Festival is the best time to market the BVI and streaming is the best way..I really would like to see going Forward the Chair Person for Festival coming from a Good and well establish private business. It will be better. Leave Govt and their cronies out.

Where are the ministers of tourism and culture, the other committee members take on this? Surely others know his mentality towards live streaming the festival events, at least the village entertainment, is backwards thinking.

So because Dirky doesn’t believe in live stream there will be no live stream. Ridiculous! That’s why certain people can’t/SHOULDN’T hold senior positions. They bring their beliefs into play and build their ego with the power they have in that position.
There are the elderly who have family participating in the queen show and are unable to attend for health reasons. Because of one man’s belief, they are now deprived of the privilege of watching it live. EGO is a dangerous thing especially when we don’t see ourselves boosting it. POWER is our main stay and we do all we can to feed that power which FEEDS our EGO. Some people are dangerous to give power to. That’s why our country can’t move forward. Power hungry people keeping us down. We have made money everything. It is supposed to be our freedom we are celebrating, our emancipation from enslavement, but yet our own are still keeping us down. Putting different shackles on us. Just like our own gave us to the slave masters in the beginning, our own still throwing us out to the wolves. POWER is dangerous Dirky. Keep your EGO in check.

This is old school, last century, thinking. Partner sound like he does still listen to cds and cassette tapes. Also, very small mind thinking. There's a bigger world outside of Tortolla. Livestreaming is the perfect way to promote the festival and the island. It's an investment which can result in more attendees for the next year. Such a lack of vision by someone in a leadership role.

Dirk, This was a shock to see you went from being an entertainer to a person of such a restrictive personality. We did not know you have dislikes such as these. The Idea of festival is a celebration but as you young people get in leadership roles such as this, you turn all technical and hyperventilate that people are actually celebrating and simply just want to be happy. Dirk you have to show more humility, humble to the realities of life. A Captain of a ship does not tell the Chief Engineer to give him the advice he only wants to hear. The Captain looks at the Bigger Picture all the time which is the safety and comfort of the passengers. This is leadership Dirk. Stop being the sacrificial lamb of others and just make Fesitival what it should be, A Celebration.
