I am not clear we have articulated clear goals of Emancipation Festival- Mr Troy E. Christopher

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Businessman and former political candidate Mr. Troy E. Christopher has raised serious concerns about the true meaning of the emancipation celebrations in the Virgin Islands.

He questioned whether it is merely a celebration of freedom or if the significance of African civilisation and its contributions to the Virgin Islands (VI) heritage and ancestors is truly understood.

Mr. Christopher expressed his concerns during the Umoja program with Mr. Cromwell Smith, also known as ‘Edju En Ka,’ on ZBVI 780 AM on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

He pointed out that for some people, these celebrations are just an opportunity to party, seek stress relief, and enjoy a vacation. He acknowledged that the government views it as a tourism initiative, which is a valid perspective.

Maintaining emancipation

However, he posed the important question of whether this time is being used for education.

He stated, “Are we using it to maintain emancipation? The country is facing many challenges, and the world is going through a lot. There is a tendency to want to take a break and focus on partying and stress relief. However, I believe we could make significant contributions towards understanding and maintaining emancipation- to think critically about what it means to be free.”

Mr. Christopher emphasised that using this time for educational purposes should also be a primary goal.

He remarked, “I am not entirely clear if we have articulated all the goals we want to achieve through the emancipation celebrations. Are we simply remembering the past, or are we also pausing to evaluate what we have achieved and what our future goals are? This reflection should be part of the emancipation celebration.”

Opportune time for community building

He concluded by stating that there is a tremendous opportunity for us to use this season to strengthen our community and build upon our achievements. It would be unfortunate to simply celebrate without progressing and to allow ourselves to regress in the pursuit of true emancipation.

This year, the 71st Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival was recognised, and a month-long celebration ran from July 13 to August 9, 2025.

Only person emancipated this year was Andrew Fahie who was freed for the day from the HOA on the VIP truck. Rest of us still under the New Colonial Dictator Natalio and the infrastructure got that 1833 look so the donkey in the parade didn't look out of place at all. Some of the twerking still needs improvement.

Time to try someone new. Two terms are enough for all Festival heads...Its now all about connections &, money I still think Brian Penn was the best we ever had, He didn't book bands he and his committee and the public never heard play, all Local Bands had to performed at a prefestival fun raiser, Then they get booked for festival village according to their sound variety and quality, not friendship and trial. Back day Local bands played for 5 -6 - 7 - 800 the most. Now its 3 -4 5- 6 thousand, How nice that is, but do moat of them dezerving. ..Mr. Penn did things right, fair, without favour, all business...We had Jouvey with big bands, Jamband, Immaginations, System, Ecstasy, Prime Time on Monday Morning and it never affected the Parades, it was a blast, The Local bands now doing a good job for Jouvert, We need the to be announce Monnday night and the Road March king of bands have doing a Tuesday Morning celebeation tramp for the fans....So, this thing about Jouvert and Parade cannot be on the same day its a joke, nonsense, the right people make the right things happen, we don't have the right and serious people running the thing..People taking part in parade have to sign an agreement base on discussion of starting time qgreed to with all parties, with consequences, = sanctions, pay cut, losing points, The point is we had waaay bigger Tramps on Monday morning, We had waay bigger parades that started on time...

Village and jouvert can host what they want, but you see our parade, please put restrictions on troupes. If they can't abide by the restrictions, the folks can watch from the sidelines, stay home or travel. The RT parade is x-rated in various areas. Pum pum, bottom checks and breast out deh door; nothing much left to the imagination - pick your meat.

The parade never used to be feathers and flesh. People started complaining it was boring instead of contributing. The ones who complained the most don't do anything to make it better. Churches should have stepped up but they didn't. Only 2 schools used to participate - ASPS and Enis Adams. The committee tried. One year Education participated and they wore short shorts instead of showing their what's it not. When they won over the feathers and flesh there were people who were annoyed. We need to decide what we really want.

      @ resident:

Approximately 35 plus years years gone, I have distance myself from the mess, God's power been my strength.
Those that still believe that what has been labeled as emancipation festival ignor reality. In truth what has been annually celebrated, in fact, is carnival, fleshly vulgarly practices. What have genuine Christianty principles has in common with that jezebel orgy, XXX, Sodom, and Gomarro, Pompeii styles, strip down on the public street, like Brazil animalistic human canival ignorance?, absolutly nothing in common.
Sadly, the B.V.I is lost in pitch black darkness advertised as freedom celebrations.

Like the decreased Reggie singer said, "Action speaks louder than words, don't be deceived by all those fancy (political) talkers (pretenders).

God is love. Love is God. Amen.

The whole of the festival celebration calling for and is begging for SANKOFA. One hundred ninety one years ago the white man said the black people were freed in the Virgin Islands but, thank God for but. There were free black people in the Virgin Islands before that at Long Look at Kingston.
Are we celebrating 71 years of the street party or the true meaning of freedom? SANKOFA Fellas.

It’s never too late to reset. We need to a curriculum in our schools (all of them) private and public that teaches proper Caribbean and African history. This is necessary in order for our children and young people to be able to appreciate our heritage and culture. Were we not free before we were enslaved? Why is “black” history relegated to the shortest month of the year and its primary focus is emancipation? Afro-Caribbean history ought to be explored in its entirety. I think the center of BVI pride is what we were able to accomplish after the plantation era ended… or did it? It seems like we are still slaves but to a different system. I hope we can emancipate ourselves from this one.
