Hypocrisy? Medicinal cannabis legal in UK since 2018 in $1.2B industry

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– While some British Overseas Territories (OTs) like the [British] Virgin Islands and Bermuda have been blocked by the United Kingdom (UK) from setting up their medical marijuana industry, medicinal marijuana has been legal in the UK since 2018.

Data from Commercial Dehydrators, an equipment supplier in the industry, suggests that the UK’s medicinal cannabis industry is expected to be worth US$1.2 billion by 2024.

Treatment for patients with rare illness

While medicinal cannabis in the UK is only legal for patients with rare illnesses, the UK is also one of the world’s biggest cultivators of medicinal cannabis only for the export market.

UK doctors, in 2018, were given the option to legally issue prescriptions for cannabis-based medicines when they agree that their patients could benefit from this treatment.

The law was laid in parliament after the then Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, listened to concerns from parents of children with conditions such as severe epilepsy.

The UK law does not limit the types of conditions that can be considered for treatment and doctors also do not need to seek approval from an expert panel in order for patients to access the medicines.

Caribbean OTs facing roadblocks

Meanwhile, British Caribbean OTs seeking to set up their own industry have been faced with strict oversight from the UK, including refusal to assent to laws passed by those OTs to establish the industry.

United Kingdom (UK) MP, Lloyd C. Russell-Moyle said it was wrong for Britain to intervene in Bermuda's declassification of Marijuana based on international treaties that they've had no say in and he called for the issue to be resolved.

Back in July 2020, the Government of the Virgin Islands also passed a bill to legalise the medical and therapeutic use of cannabis, allowing for the possession of the drug in small amounts.

To date, the bill has not received assent by the Governor.

What could possibly go wrong with medical marijuana in the BVI?

It is entirely stupid that cannabis is illegal in BVI.

However I doubt we would have a very effective medicinal cannabis business in the face of competition from other producers.

Now hear this hypocritical irony. The BVI is self-governing. If you believe that crap, I have some cheap oil-rich land above Round Rock for sale. Many ah yu may rush to buy for I’m from above Round Rock and ah yu put your trust and belief in anyone that come from above Round Rock. The truth is the UK has unilateral power over the BVI despite the self-governing claim. We are family with shared values are also a lie and mirage. One of the UK’s unilateral power executed through the UK-appointed governor is the selected assent power. By the way, not assenting to a bill in the UK passed by Parliament is as rare as a green flying Mike. The last time the crown didn’t give assent to a bill was in 1708 under Queen Anne-the Scottish Militia Bill. Furthermore, the UK is a ruling power unto itself and accountable only to itself. Judge and jury. Recreational cannabis is illegal in the UK. However, medicinal marijuana is legal in the UK and has been since 2018. The UK is a major exporter, if not the largest exporter, of medical marijuana. But it wants to put pressure on OTs, its supposed family with shared values, through its assent power. Do as I say not as I do. We are your master and knows what is best for you and if you don’t like our attitude or behaviour, out unilateral power so what are you going to do about it? Nada. Might is right and white is right. Two words—Double-standard and hypocrisy.

You need to stop comparing dirt weed to skunk bud. If you think the BVI is going to compete in the global Mary Jane export business you’ve already been sampling the product. If you think growers in the BVI are going to get rich selling medicinal weed here in the home land you’re really high! In the US the market is already flooded with high quality lab grown reefer. Best BVI can do now is make it legal to possess small amounts and push it to the tourism industry and the only way to do that is to regulate growing and put a “high” tax on it. Only a stoner would think that’s a good idea!

The UK didn’t have corruption to contend with when it brought their bill in l, unlike this place and the individual that was pushing it!

You can tell you do not look at the UK news or listen to it. Corruption & mismanagement is at it worse as well as crime.

There is no such thing as a non-corrupt government, particularly among the leading powers. The question is to what degree, purpose, and at what monetary level. If you believe otherwise you're ignorant or naive.

Relax. This need to be properly sought out.. I can't take the scent of Marijuana with blend make it worst it makes me sick when they add crack. Imagine yiu have neighbors with the right to smoke..I think these clause need to be included..1/ "If smoking legal marijuana "legal marijuana" Meaning any other illegal substance added to it its then become illegal and if smoking or using legal or illegal Marijuana to the disturbance or nuisance to another or any neighbor then a remedy must be sought to discontinue such, hence the police may need to ...seek such remedy as 1/ relocate the user or warn the user to discontinue after 2 warnings, then the act becomes illegal and criminal..2/ In the case of a renter permission must seek and be given by the landlord, if not then the act of smoking in such premises becomes illegal..3/ The head of the house meaning the parent/s or renter is responsible for good neighbourly practice in regards to themselves and other smoking members under their roof..!! Thats my input.

Cigarettes are much worse in all aspects but I don't hear you complaining, especially if your neighbor smokes it. If you kicking up about marijuana scent then kick up about cigarettes and make them illegal too.

The UK do not want the BVI or no OT to have economic freedom as they know that is one of the keys towards independence. They intend to try to enslave us forever but call it otherwise. We need to wake up.

Whats stupid is the arguments against it and the racism that perpetuates those arguments.

Give the people the ability to plant their own medicine freely!!!!!!

End of story. No worry about regional competition or finding what works for everyone, let them plant their own.

For some its all about the money.

Other people want freedom & don't care which other country already legalized and got ahead in the 'industry'.

Freedom is not a financial race. Let us plant our own medicine!!!

Look into how Thailand completely legalized and encourages small back yard farmers. That should be our model not America or Canada.

Its an injustice that we are not able to have the laws our representatives & people want.

Those international treaties drawn up when 1970? Probably instructions from the new world order or whatever they call themselves. We cant get it legalized because the order to keep this illegal was based on something totally different than its medical status & effects.

All the studies have proven cannabis is beneficial to a multitude of purposes, yet the advanced EU is only now loosening its grip on cannabis, I wonder why?

The UK seem to dont want us making too much money where we can feel we dont need them. If you check it out they they looking to force public registers on us even though its not a standard globally and our competitors wont have to do it so basically they knowingly putting us at a disadvantage. We say ok lets diversify the economy we gonna start a medical marijuana industry that might help our economy They against that too. What does the UK actually support that is any help to our economy? They only looking to make sure the white people get their papers and to push gay marriage on we and to let the police have free reign to trample all over our human rights.

It's still illegal in the. UK..the lis ence that GW have is millions of dollars a year. Its used to make sativex..a oers ription on the nhs..drops
  • @jg (20/05/2023, 12:00) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
license for millions of pounds a year and used to make sativex. If im not mistaken that drug or other over the counter synthetic canabiniods can cause fatal overdose, unlike the natural plant.

All that means is the UK wanted to allow synthetic production for purposes of gaining intelectual property rights aka patenting.

Everything naturally healing they want to put in a pill and tell us not to grow it ourselves.

Doubtless someone in the UK is getting kick backs off not allowing the natural plant to be planted and we say there is no corruption in the UK. HMMMM
