Hundreds tested @ CIL health expo
The event, sponsored by Caribbean Insurers Limited and which had the participation of many public and private medical entities and also overseas institutions, took place at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall in Road Town.
Speaking to this news site, owner and medical director of Eureka Medical Clinic, Medicure Pharmacy and the Bougainvilla Clinic Dr Heskith A. Vanterpool said the health expo was good in that it allowed persons to see what are some of the services available in the Virgin Islands.
“I know that there has been the promotion of some of the outside hospitals but I think it is important for us to realise that locally there are a lot of good health facilities,” he said.
He made the point that a rising tide lifts all boats noting that once there is a rising tide of improved healthcare in the territory then everyone will strive to keep their services they provide on the cutting edge.
“I think it is wonderful to showcase what we can do here in the British Virgin Islands and to show our connections to the outside world for things that we maybe never will be able to do here in the BVI,” he said.
Visiting health service providers hail expo
Maria C. Quinquilla of Pavia Hospital of Puerto Rico said, “We are thrilled to be here this morning. We have had over 150 visitors at our booth where we have been testing people for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure as well as diabetes with our glucose and high blood pressure monitoring tests.”
She said too that they had a nutritionist on board to advise visitors about health eating habits. “It has really been a very successful, well planned activity and we are very happy to be in Tortola for this event which is benefitting a lot of people that are concerned about their health status,” she said.
Carely Pizarro Cortez, International Patients Coordinator of San Jorge Children's Hospital of Puerto Rico said the event has been great. “It is the first time that we are doing this type of event and the response has been great,” she said. She explained that they are a paediatric hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico and that they had a number of different specialists on the ground at the expo.
“We hope to come another year and bring more services because it is a great event,” she said.
Air ambulance company REVA of Puerto Rico was also a part of the contingent of medical personal at the Expo. “So far the response from the people has been absolutely marvellous,” said Carmen Mojica.
“Right now in the fair we are just contributing to this event and we are happy that we were invited by Caribbean Insurers Limited and we are very happy to be here,” she said.
She noted that medical care is very expensive and as such more of these fairs are needed. “Not everybody can afford to go to the hospital and with the few tests that we are doing here it is a beginning,” she said.
