ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI –Howard Hughes, 50, was today, April 22, 2020, sentenced to 10 days in jail for Breach of Curfew when he appeared before Magistrate Christilyn Benjamin.

Hughes had pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on April 12, 2020, he violated the imposition of Curfew Order No. 5 of 2020, having been found on Main Street at 11:00 pm on the day in question.

The round-the-clock curfew order enforced at the time had prohibited anyone, except essential workers, from being in a public space.

Hughes was sentenced to time served which meant he has already served his time since he was incarcerated since April 12, 2020.

The defendant; however, is also charged with Burglary but pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Benjamin said the court could not determine that Mr Hughes “was a fit and proper candidate” to be offered bail since it could not establish whether Mr Hughes has a fixed place of abode.

The unrepresented Hughes was remanded until June 4, 2020.

I can't stand them either. The worst island of them all is Tortola. Some of the people there are so rude, insular and hypocritical. Not all of them. Just the ones on VINO.

We are all going to be sorry when these island people decide they can’t stay here anymore.

They stayed post Irma but this shock on top is gonna be too much for many.

What will we be left with? Some IPs and some expat lawyers and a civil service.

We need to be compassionate and the 7% tax on downislanders is not so. Introduce a 10% income tax by all means, but don’t introduce a tax discriminating based on where you are in society.

    Govtgotthiswront.

I don't think so. Honestly. The 7% is for ANYONE sending money out the country to their family or business.

Mr Hughes has no legal representation whatsoever. All he can do is throw himself at the mercy of the justice system. That’s a shameful state of affairs.
