BIRAS CREEK, Virgin Gorda, VI- District Nine Representative and Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley, has praised the Houwer family for their commitment to enhancing the Virgin Islands’ (VI) tourism product with the reopening of Biras Marina & Resort and future developments.

Hon Wheatley was speaking during the opening of The Mangrove at BIRAS on January 2, 2026. The new restaurant sits where the Biras Creek Resort’s Fat Virgin Cafe was located before the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.

More development plans in the future

“I commend the Houwer family and their commitment to this project and to the development of the North Sound area. See, it goes way, way back. What you are seeing here is only the beginning of a further vision, a modern vision of what the Houwer family committed themselves to over a 15 or 20-year period.”

Hon Wheatley explained that there is a lot of property at Biras Creek that the Houwer family has a long-term vision for.

“A lot of persons sitting in this room have walked with the Houwer family over the years to bring this vision to life; this is what we are seeing here today.”

He added that he was blown away at the site upon coming in for the restaurant’s opening, describing it as “beautiful”, adding that it brought back many memories.

Biras Creek, the Minister said, is once again an iconic spot thanks to the Houwer family’s commitment.

“On behalf of the Virgin Gorda community and the BVI, I want to commend you for once again enhancing the BVI tourism product, having Biras right here in this spot. So I commend you, thank you for your commitment and what you will do going forward.”

The development is really nice, the menu and food are just average. Virgin Gorda has some of the best cuisine in the BVI, I'll give them about 3 months to get their act together.

It’s clear you have not been there, trust me the food is off the chain some of the best for high end dinning

My only concern is they built it right on the water. High tide or storms can damage it. It looks lovely though.

Very good job to the young owners who are apart of the sandwich generation — adults simultaneously caring for children and ageing parents.
