FAT HOGS BAY, Tortola, VI – Through the Ministry of Health and Social Development’s Housing Recovery Assistance Programme, Mr. Ted Rabsatt of Fat Hog’s Bay is now the latest recipient of a new home as part of the programme.

Mr. Rabsatt’s receipt of the keys comes as part of the program which was implemented following the devastation of the 2017 hurricanes according to an August 4, 2023, press release from the Ministry of Housing and Social Development.

Gov't will continue project as long as there is need - Hon Wheatley

On the scene for the handing over was Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) commended the Housing Unit for making the project possible.

“I am very pleased that we are able to continue to provide homes to persons who lost their homes in the hurricanes of 2017. We will continue to do this as long as there's a need to make sure persons receive shelter. I am very pleased to see this project finally come to fruition,” Hon Wheatley said.

Premier, Hon Dr. Natalio D. Wheatley, acting in his capacity as Seventh District Representative also congratulated Mr. Rabsatt on his new home and acknowledged the difficulties he faced since the 2017 hurricanes.

“I want to congratulate the contractor Autland because the house flew up and in no time Mr. Ted was able to have his house and we pray God’s blessings upon him as he has a shelter from the rain, from the heat, and all the different elements which is something that we cannot underestimate in our community,” Premier Wheatley said.

Mr Rabsatt 'a deserving citizen' - Hon Penn

Meanwhile, Eighth District Representative and former Minister for Health, Hon A. Marlon Penn said he was grateful that the project was completed for a deserving citizen like Mr. Rabsatt who has done tremendous work in terms of the social aspect of the community.

“He has given his property to facilitate the sidewalks that you see here today. He is very deserving of this project, and I want to thank him for his patience. I know it took a while to get to this point,” Honorable Penn said.

Mr. Rabsatt expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Health and Social Development for providing him with the opportunity to own his new home after years of living in an unideal structure.

I hope that the Government has not gifted this to him, and that he is renting. The fact that his previous property, which he presumably still owns, was not insured should not mean that the Government should gift him hundreds of thousands of dollars of a new property.

The government was to build him this home years ago before the hurricane came and they never did! This has nothing to do about being uninsured. Who knows, knows!

so why they didnt concrete the whole yard? there is still water seeping out from underground also why did they put the entrance facing that way. if you see you will know its facing someone parking lot with little space and this man land have so much extra space remaining where his door could have been either infront facing the roadway or at the other side facing grams. bad planning i would say.

Where the door is is more solid than any other where on that land. If you know anything about the bay and the swamp you would understand why water is still seeping. It does not matter how good a plumber or sewer system you put in place. Nature must take its course. Water will not stop running so stop worrying your head about what should and shouldn't be done. All they have to do to drain the water is put it to the ghut evenvifvit means cutting the road to get to the ghut. Simple issue to take care of. Congratulations Mr. Rabsatt

well if that's the case why not face the entrance to the road? It can remain same just let it face the road. if you look at the second picture there are bars there whereas it could have been the entrance and the bars towards the parking lot.

People like you can never be pleased. If the VIP government did not help him then you would ask why they have not built him a house. Now they build the house, you are criticizing everything you think they should have done. Some of you are real mental cases.

You and a few others from the community get together and go do positive community service and do the things you see still need doing after a whole house was built and stop being ungrateful.

I am hard on this government at times, but I must give them credit for this programme. It is a good thing, and the government must be applauded.

All during the challenges of covid the VIP government continued this initiative, and I am glad to see it is still alive and well. A lot of persons who were in need benefited from this initiative. Please keep it going. Good job by the government.

Some people like some of the talk show host and the governor only see the negative in the BVI and its government but they will never see the many positive they do with things such as these.

The government got money to build and renovation of people house but can't build an office for them self, rather than waistin money on renting buildings.

I’m not averse to government providing housing for the truly needy. But my selfish complaint is add a little style to the design. The box style design harkens back to the late 1950s. It is not going to cost that much to design a building more aesthetically pleasing. The more aesthetically pleasing look would be consistent with the surrounding neighbors and the community. This design is a boiler plate, cookie cutter design model. How much design effort and technical pride went into it? None. Because the recipient is at the low end of the economic ladder, should not drive they’re not getting or deserving some more aesthetically pleasing. We can do better than this. I see nuff politicians in the photo op beaming with pride and thumbing their chests. Are they proud of this design??? ?? A bright color box design. Is this quality emblematic of the acceptable quality in the BVI?

Nothing is pleasing for you guuides. If government say the sun rise in the East, complainers will say no it rises in the west. Only an architect will complain about the building not being aesthetically pleasing. What really is your fuss? I’m sure and confident that Mr. Rabsatt is as happy as a pig routing in mud. I’m sure that he has worry about the shape of his building. And is happy he has someplace to quietly lay his head at night and not get wet when it rains. I must give it to you though you noted it a selfish complaint. At least you were honest. What the hell is aesthetically pleasing anyway? I’m an architecturally challenge soul, so educate us.
