Hospital parking lot project suspended!
The project, which began in November 2011 to resurface the lot to alleviate the traffic congestion, was expected to be completed by mid-December 2011.
In explaining the reason for the halt, Hon. Vanterpool said, “We want to make the hospital more accessible, so we are creating what is called a turning lane going into the hospital which would mean that the parking lot will be reduced in size.”
The PWD has completed the design, the Minister stated. The next step is to take it to Caucus to make sure everybody is comfortable with it. “...and once that is done we will continue the process,” he added.
When asked when that would be, the Minister replied, “within the week or so”.The cost of the project is in the ballpark of $250,000.
The resurfacing of the lot is on a long list of improvement measures to improve the aesthetics of the capital Hon. Vanterpool had stated when the project commenced.
“In terms of the greater good for the Virgin Islands community, once completed the parking lot will now be able to provide three times more parking and it will also increase pedestrian safety as dangerous pot holes and openings in the area will be fixed,” the minister had further stated.
He also disclosed that the project is being carried out very economically with the brunt of the work being shouldered by PWD and resources tapped from an existing contract with BVI Paving Ltd. signed in 2010 to resurface roads damaged during the 2010 hurricanes and floods.
