Horse racing this Sunday in memory of Clinton E. Romney aka ‘Bouncer’

Organised by the Virgin Islands Horse Owners Association, there will be six races on the day, with the feature race attracting two debut horses- Courage & Honour of Top Priority Racing Stables and Salsa Jack of Thomasville Racing Stables- along with My Running Mate of St Thomas, and 2019 Premier’s Cup winner Thulean.
The purse for the feature race is $9000.
“Mr Romney never missed horse racing,” President of the VI Horse Owners Association, Mr Lesmore Smith told Virgin Islands News Online, adding that he knew Mr Romney just about all his life and he was a very good family friend.
Mr Romney died on August 5, 2019 at the age of 73.
Annual Memorial Races
Adding that Mr Romney was also very efficient in the tourism and hospitality industry, Mr Smith said the association thought it was “fitting to pay tribute to our people when they have done well, not just forget about them…”
He added that he is hoping to have a trophy awarded in the feature race in honour of Mr Romney while the plan is to make the memorial race an annual one to be held after the Emancipation festival races.
Speaking of the race card, Mr Smith said it is billed as an exciting one. “We have a lot of new horses at home and I look forward to good participation and I think it is going to be a good day. We hope people can come out and enjoy themselves.”
Post time is 1:45 pm and admission to Ellis Thomas Downs is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children under 12.
