ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – With unrivalled tidings of comfort and joy, not to mention excitement and skill, the Hoop It up Foundation concluded its inaugural Christmas Camp yesterday December 23 , 2011 at the Multi Purpose Sports Complex.
Well over 120 boys, girls, young men and women took part in the Camp, which catered for ages rising 5 to 17.

At the week-long camp, all the participants received coaching in basic basketball skills and Coach Mike Knolls, from Delaware, USA, was on hand to give tips and deliver more technical coaching to the older groups.

Steve Parillon, founder of the foundation, said he was a tired man but that it had been a good week. “Feeling kind of tired, it’s been a long day” He said “We had games, gave out prizes and put the 'Tola kids up against the VG kids. 4 great short games and they all showed their new skills and confidence.”

The younger participants then took part in a shoot out skills challenge, the level of ability shown was quite extraordinary and testament to the hard work put in by all the coaches during the week.

“All the coaches have worked hard this week” commented Parillon “We had Mike knolls from Delaware, who was instrumental in getting Dion Edwin, Norville Carey and those guys into high school. Kennedy Bass, Eustace Freeman, myself and Kelroy Thomas. We did a lot of work on skills; some of the kids were experiencing basketball for the first time so we tried to make sure they left with a good introduction to the sport and also an interest in the sport.”

The day involved 4 matches between participants from Virgin Gorda and Tortola withVG running out overall winners. The younger participants took part in the “Shoot Outs” with Stefan Wilson winning a skate board, Acacia Williams a motorised car, Tyree Campbell a TV video plug in game and Wayne Campbell a dart board

One great component of the camp and especially the closing party was the involvement of the parents. “We had a lot of great parents helping out during the week,” commented Parillon. “I asked the parents to come out and see what was going on. At a lot of the previous camps the Parents hadn’t had the time to come out so it was encouraging to see them get involved and support their Kids, the Kids really appreciated it too,” he added.

Up next for Hoop it Up is the premier of a documentary on the basketballers whom the foundation was instrumental in getting college placements during 2011.

The show will be aired on JTV and includes live footage and interviews with the seven basketballers, who are now attending various colleges from Sauk Community College to Warner University in Florida.

The show is scheduled to air on New Year’s Day at a time to be confirmed.
