Hons Skelton & Penn snub Hon Walwyn’s Opposition press conference

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- After failing to get support from even his own Opposition members on his recent Vote of No Confidence motion brought against the Government of the Virgin Islands in the House of Assembly (HoA), Leader of the Opposition and premier-hopeful Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6) failed to get all of his Opposition members to his press conference on Thursday, August 14, 2025.

While his Alliance members, Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2) and Hon Stacy R. Mather (AL) showed up this time, missing were former Opposition Leader Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) and Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8).

The press conference saw the usual rant, particularly by Hon Walwyn, on Government’s performance, and trying to save face following his humiliation on the Vote of No Confidence on July 31, 2025, when his vote and Hon Turnbull’s were the only ones for the motion.

Hon Skelton, who was the only other Opposition Member present at the time, abstained.

Where are Hons Skelton & Penn?

Hon Walwyn was asked why two of the Opposition Members were not present at the press conference.

“Do you have control of anybody? The way that the opposition functions, from April 2023, is that we operate utilising technology. We utilise WhatsApp, and that's the way we have been operating. Whenever we are communicating about anything, the information is placed there for everyone soon.

“Just like this, I've done previously in this particular meeting, for this particular press conference, a message was sent out. Honourable Penn gave his regards. He said he's traveling today. Honourable Mather and Honourable Turnball indicated that they would be here. We had a meeting prior to this press conference. Honourable Skelton did not acknowledge the message, and he's clearly not here today. But that's not a matter for me,” Hon Walwyn responded.

‘I can do a solo quite well’- Hon Walwyn

While slamming the absent members, Hon Walwyn indicated that he was willing to go on with or without them. He even suggested that he was prepared to carry on his work alone.

“The people elected individuals to serve their interests. And it's a matter for those persons to use that confidence placed in them, how they choose to do so. I chose to be here today. I chose to stand up in the House of Assembly, albeit alone, to show the people of District 6 and the people of this country who placed their confidence in me, that even if I have to stand alone, stand, I will. I don't need a choir to sing, sir, I can do a solo quite well.”

The Opposition remains divided ever since Hon Walwyn, who remains determined to become Premier and relentlessly criticises Premier Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), staged a coup to oust Hon Skelton as Leader of the Opposition.

He, along with Hons Turnbull and Mather, formed the Alliance before Hon Walwyn went to the Governor to wrestle away the Leader of the Opposition title from Hon Skelton.

Division doesn't unite. And unless Walwyn wants to be the king he will need people to work with in order to govern. Who will those people be? VIP members or NDP members? So he can huff and puff all he wants he has no wind beneath his wings...which does nothing for the BVI ppl. His personal cult of personality fans are entertained and see it as brilliant but unless he plans to be a 1 man cabinet he is going about things in the wrong way. It's not about how great you can make yourself look individually but what we can accomplish collectively.

Do they always expect persons to change their plans at the last minute? Don’t set a date before you communicate with all the members of the OPPOSITION. Then you expect them to drop everything because your communication skills are poor. Shame on you!!!

Ive never seen division create unity. He made his bed so now let him lay in it. His political career is over. He can only win in the 6th district where a majority of voting Caribbean expats live. But even there he is in for another rude awakening come elections. The indigenous bloodlines are opening their eyes. He could visit all the bars he wants to every night. That old tactic of being seen wont save him this time. No 1st generation Virgin Islander will be Premier of this country. You simply haven't toiled this soil enough, compared to other leaders with 6-8 generations of lineage here. It isnt a diss on anyone, it just is what it is. And he hasnt learned how to follow and forgot his lowly broke days of bouncing cheques at cafesito. Now he is high and mighty and braggart. This is twice he has undermined Skelton now in search of power and ended up failing.

Hon Skelton reminds me of that rich kid who owns the cricket bat. When the game doesn’t go his way, he walks off, bat in hand, ending play by default. It is selfishness masquerading as neutrality. His silence is in no way dignified. It is the kind that echoes not with wisdom, but with abdication. When the moment called for conviction, he chose the comfort of silence.
Hon Penn, absent from both the vote on the motion of no confidence and the press conference, sent his regards from afar. Whether it’s strategic avoidance or a genuine scheduling conflict, that's on him.
Stand strong, Hon Walwyn. Don’t let their silence stifle the message. A solo voice, when principled, can still echo across the field.
