ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) took time out from the office on June 22, 2023, to check on the latest progress of three social homes in the Virgin Islands.

Since the inception of the Housing Recovery and Assistance Programme after Hurricane Irma, over 20 social homes have been built and over 200 homes have been repaired.

Commenting on his Facebook page following the visit, Hon Wheatley said his “intention is to expand the programme to include first-time homeowners, as I believe this would put more persons in their own homes.”

Minister pleased with quality & pace of work

Meanwhile, the latest three beneficiaries of the social homes Hon Wheatley visited are Mr Ted Rabsatt of Fat Hogs Bay, Mr Dalvin Callwood from Little Harbour, Jost van Dyke and Ms Cassandra Sutton from Sea Cows Bay.

According to Government Information Services (GIS), Mr Rabsatt received a rebuild grant while Ms Sutton and Mr Callwood are recipients of social homes.

The three houses are expected to be completed by next month when the Ministry will officially hand them over to the beneficiaries.

“Homes currently under construction, even as we prepare to begin a few more. I was particularly pleased with the quality and pace of work, some being built in less than 12 weeks,” Hon Wheatley remarked.

IF, and these are BIG IFS this initiative is done and IF it is done fairly and randomly instead of cherry picking individuals, it would be a good initiative. I feel certain criteria should be submitted names removed and a number assigned so that the approving party does not know who they are approving and can therefore do it unbiased.

It behooves me how Government is parading around about assisting first-time homeowners and persons who lost their homes to the hurricanes meanwhile they let others who are willing to work lose their home.

The Premier should works with the National Bank to give credit for young people, they are willing to work more years and pay the mortgage.
It doesn’t make sense to sell for any person, they will buy and rent or reselling the property, it’s easy to do business between “them.”
