ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI— In what was predicted by Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) in our story of July 29, 2025, the one-man-led Motion of No Confidence brought to the House of Assembly (HoA) by Opposition Leader Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6) has been defeated.

In fact, at the start of the Continuation of the Seventh Sitting of the Second Session of the Fifth House of Assembly today, July 31, 2025, only two Opposition Members showed up: Hon Walwyn and former Opposition Leader Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL).

When it was time to debate, however, even a pin falling to the floor could have been heard, and no one indicated a willingness to debate.

“Members, we will not tarry on this matter…” Deputy Speaker Dr the Hon Karl Dawson (R1) stated after repeatedly calling on Members to debate the Motion.

Hon Walwyn was about to "wrap up" the debate, indicating with a broad smile that “the time that the Members didn’t want to speak, I will use that time myself to speak".

The veteran politician and Deputy Premier, Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3), using Standing Orders 36, as it relates to replying to Motions, said there was no need for Hon Walwyn to make a response since no one had replied when the floor was open for debate.

The Deputy Speaker subsequently agreed with the Member for the Third District and closed the debate.

After the Deputy Speaker called for a vote on the Motion, Hon Walwyn requested a division of votes.

Hon Walwyn & Motion crushed

All members of the government voted strongly against the one-man motion.

Hon Walwyn was only able to receive the support of fellow Opposition Member Honourable Melvin M. Turnbull (R2), who showed up late.

Fellow Alliance member Hon Stacy R. Mather (AL) was absent.

A crushing blow to the Leader of the Opposition was the abstention of the former Leader of the Opposition, and it is also believed that Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) may have also abstained.

The Opposition remains divided after Hon Walwyn led a coup to overthrow the then Opposition Leader Hon Ronnie W. Skelton, and is now coming with his own party- The Alliance.

Hon Walwyn, in his motion, accused the government of not doing anything for the economy and its infrastructure, and also slammed the government for a $20M overspending on an increase in salaries for politicians and public officers.

We will bring more details on this crushing defeat for Hon Walwyn.

why is this a crushing defeat for walwyn. we all know it wasnt going to pass even if all opposition members showed up and voted. on the contrary this was a good win for walwyn as he gets to continue his story in primetime that the government aint doing nothing. and a lot of us agree with him.

The member of the opposition who abstained should tender his resignation immediately.

Myron’s own actions created an irreparable rift in the opposition, did he really think he would have their support, or is he delusional, or he just playing the political game, or he just want to belittle the Premier, or he just want to give the UK more leverage, or just want to make the country look bad on the world stage, or anything for power? Ting start!!!!

It's clear as daylight, the opposition is not together, and the VIP is politically skilled in organizing their next strategy. If this continues, I don’t see the VIP losing the next election.

" only 2 opposition members turned up" and then one arrived late.
That is a shameful display. What are we paying them for ?
Don't they know they are still meant to represent the people.
They obviously have no respect for the system..all they want is their pay cheque

They should ve sent home without pay .....and don't come back

Right now, there is greater discipline on the Government's side. Their strategy was not to respond, and they stuck to the plan. Myron my friend, Sowande won this round hands down.

Hon myron accomplished his objectives, myron knows exactly what was going to happen but his main objective was to let the general public know the true state of this territory . The VIP government needs do better .

Walwyn did good but his troops failed him. Clearly the other 2 opposition members are still in their feelings and would prefer to let this useless VIP government remain in control. Things are looking very good for the VIP at this point and very dire for our country if they remain in office for another 4 years. This is an indication of what will play out in the next election.

How can ONE Opposition/ Opposition Leader win something like this?I think he went tooo far!! .As a lawyer he should have known that there are other routes. It’s hard for the wealthy, how are the poor surviving. The answer is by resilience!! Are we happy with the state of everything in the VIRGIN ISLANDS?My opinion is that we need a very good Governor who will breath over the Political Leaders back to insure that they are doing their JOBS.

He didn’t expect to win. Andrew did the same thing when it was just him and Fraser. It’s about getting the message out and playing the long game. Mitch and Mather missed a golden opportunity to make their case to the public. Oh well, it is what it is.

So Ronnie abstained from voting and Marlon purposely stayed in his car (allegedly, according to what I heard today) from such and important HOA session all because Myron brought this vote of no confidence on the government? How childish! Listening today to HOA, tells me those members care nothing about this country. They all put up a facade. A selfish set of individuals.

How the 2 opposition members represent the people, by attending funerals and abstaining when there are important matters in the HOA to address.

Myron is not the real leader of the opposition

We may be witnessing a political shift with the VIP being in power for years regardless of how the game turns out on the field.

Myron is not a politician he talks good but lack strategy

How is he the leader of the opposition when 2 members abstained from voting and 1 didn't even show up?
    Who is he leading then?

Myron does lack the strategic method to his rhetorical madness. That may be his downfall.
