VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI - Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) has spoken out against rising crime in the Ninth District of Virgin Gorda and Anegada.

In a short video released today, Saturday, May 23, 2020, the Minister; who is also District Representative for the area, said that given the territory is facing the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important that the everyone come to together to get through the period.

"Over the past few months, we have seen a bank robbery, theft of materials from the softball field, a break-in at the football field, and more recently two break-ins," he said.

"This is not who we are in the Ninth District, when we have challenges we reach out... we come together and we help each other," Hon Wheatley added.

The Minister said the district is known to be virtually crime-free and said it should remain so while empathising with the businesses who faced losses as a result of the perpetrators.

He encouraged anyone with criminal intent to reach out for help before committing crimes and urged the community to speak out if they see anything.

"We are all in this together... if you see something, say something, crime anywhere is a serious problem everywhere... lets put an end to this now," Hon Wheatley said.

You all had better tell what you know because they will hit you next, and then you will be screaming for people to help poor you. This is a small place and nothing is kept secret for too long. These scoundrels would steal from their own parents. Make a call to give info if you have it, secretly. If any of your disclosure gets out against you, then we would know it was the police who disclosed this, and they should be fired, arrested and put in prison. If they are not from here, after prison, they will be deported...case closed.

I will be very disappointed if you are from Virgin Gorda but we will never know. What I will say though, the Virgin Gorda Community (Anegada included) is one of the more welcome places in the BVI where "ex-pats" are welcome even when they (the locals) retain their identity. From the moment you step off the Ferry, you immediately feel that full-body transformation which immediately plunges you into a euphoric atmosphere, as though you have transformed into another world. You are always greeted with a hearty " good morning" from both young and old. One would hardly hear " I was born here" or any such remarks that make you feel unwelcome. I am sure there are issued but in my many years visiting the Island(s) I have never experienced any. I cannot say the same for the Main Island where every step is like walking on tinder boxes where if stepped on, someone is ready to pounce on you and issued those expected words " I born here". "If we are different " is too be truly apply it should start with Virgin Gorda. So different that locals from the Main Island (Tortola) at times look on those from Virgin Gorda as being inferior. Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke small geographically but you are truly gems of the Virgin Islands.

It is all in your mind because there are hardly any Tortolian around any more. Majority are expats so if anyone making you feel uncomfortable it is your own expats.

I agree with you 100%! The people that expats complain about are also expats or the children of an expat. There are only a few persons in the BVI who can boast of being true Virgin Islanders (based on parents and grandparents being VIslanders as well).

Would the Honourable Minister please look into the cock fighting pit currently been constructed in the South Sound, North Sound, Virgin Gorda? Cock fighting is illegal in the Virgin Islands.
