Hon. Vanterpool wants a Virgin Islander for TRC’s top spot

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – More than likely a Virgin Islander will be tipped to be the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC), said Minister for Communications and Works Hon. Mark Vanterpool at the swearing in ceremony for the new Cabinet at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall on November 9, 2011.

Since the departure of Tomas Lamanuskas in June 2011, Guy Malone, a Virgin Islander, has been acting in the top post and apparently Minister Vanterpool wants to keep the trend that way.

“I will try to appoint a CEO as soon as possible. I have my thoughts but we will look at all that is presented, but I certainly want to make sure it’s local. I think there are locals who are available and who can do the job. So we will review and make sure that happens,” he told Virgin Islands News Online.

Interestingly, this news agency was first to report in an August article that the TRC’s Chairman Colin Scatliffe had hinted that the next CEO could be a Caribbean national.

Scatliffe had also divulged that the two Virgin Islanders, who had applied for the position, did not make the cut.

Furthermore, the Communications Minister disclosed that he will let the TRC monitor complaints of anti-competitive behaviours among the service providers in the Territory.

“We want to have fairness in the telecommunications industry and fairness means better product and a better delivery for the people....so that the public will have a fair chance at lower cost,” he charged.

Currently, there are three service providers in the Virgin Islands (VI): LIME, Digicel and CCT Global Communications.

The TRC is a statutory body responsible for regulating the telecommunications sector of the Territory. The Commission is also responsible for promoting the development of telecommunications throughout the VI.

Excellent decision Minister Vanterpool. A Government that look within first and not stay within and look out will be a Government for life. This is historic that a Government actually look amongst its people first for key positions than source outside against its own people. Great Job Minister and we will will continue to watch.

There is no such thing as an acting CEO of the TRC. Ask Guy what is his post?

Just because he is acting does not mean he is qualified for the job. It just means that TRC has been on cruise control until a replacement can be found. Guy does not have the vision or experience to take this organization where it needs to go. We need to stop being so foolish with this nonsense of giving people jobs just because they are from here.

Mark dont start the BULL. Look for the most qualified for the job. It is one thing to have a local act in the post and just sit back and allow the organization to be stagnant and another thing to hire someone with the experience and vision [be it local or otherwise] and watch the organization move forward and flourish
