DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – Opposition Member and veteran legislator in the Virgin Islands (VI) House of Assembly, Hon Mark H. Vanterpool (R4) has denounced any possibility of the United Kingdom (UK) Government suspending the VI constitution and taking over the affairs of the territory.

“Like every other country in this modern-day, we the people have the ability and the right to manage our own affairs,” Hon Vanterpool said during the debate on the Virgin Islands Investment Act 2021 at the continuation of the Eleventh Sitting of the Third Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) of the Virgin Islands at Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff's Bottom on August 19, 2021.

Would UK let outsiders run territory? - Hon Vanterpool

Hon Vanterpool drew comparisons to the UK government and corruption allegations and questioned if the UK would let outsiders take over their country and run their affairs due to those allegations.

“But we in the Virgin Islands seem to think that because we may do something wrong or not right, or we might not follow some rules… we must let somebody take us over,” he said.

He said the VI has not asked the UK for ‘a single penny’ and has even financed a large portion of the UK-appointed Governor in the Virgin Islands, yet persons believe that the territory cannot manage itself.

Pointing out mistrust in its own people, Hon Vanterpool said that when persons in the VI do wrong, they must be a system to have them corrected or brought to justice.

Likewise, he said, Governments who do wrong must face the boot from office; however, that should not mean the territory is unable to manage its own affairs.

VI managing its own affairs for decades - Hon Vanterpool

He said the VI has been managing its affairs for decades, since the end of Grant-in-Aid, and called for an end in the reliance of the Governor as the figurehead of the territory.

“Everybody seems to think that the Governor… must do everything, we must put our faith in the trust of the Governor,” he said.

“I'm not Speaking of any particular governor, I’m talking about the name governor, Mr Speaker, its time that we run our own affairs,” Hon Vanterpool declared.

High corruption in UK

“Why are we afraid to say that there are investigations in the Uk Government's Present Prime Minister handling of stimulus funds?” he questioned.

The Fourth District representative reminded that the UK Government remains shrouded in corruption allegations, and yet they continue to run their own affairs and manage their own finances.

Somebody is afraid of what they may find out if we dig too deep?

Isn't this the same man who stated "the people need to know" on that first day he was granted a seat in the present HOA, after vigorous objection to this by the Speaker's tax-payer funded lawyers?

And now he is quiet like a (well-fed) lamb and doesn't say a word against them? What gives? What deal/s did he cut? Why the sudden attempts at misdirection?

Lest we forget, this is the man we elected... whose side is he really on?

The BVIs may well have the right to manage its own affairs, but history thus far has shown, it does not seem to have the ability to do so competently. See Peebles Hospital, Pier Park project, airline debacle, 2 ton coke bust, Prospect Reef, lots of missing monies, poor environmental management, poor management of infrastructure, poor investment in education, cronyism and corruption obvious to anyone who reads the online and printed media, and so on and so forth.

Very good points. Unfortunately the slave mentality still exists so our very own black people want to be taken over. Because some do wrong none of us can manage BVI affairs?

I do think that there are probably honest ethical Belongers who could do a better job of managing the Territory. The problem is that they don't want to step up, possibly because to bring people to accounts could involve family and or friends. Same reason most Belongers don't want to be cops here. That said, I remain hopeful that at some point the trash will be taken out and that others will be able to clean up the mess created by decades of no consequences. It won't be easy though.

The BVI was left to handle its own affairs the UK has left us alone for a long time but Mark enough is enough all you plications did for the last 30 years is take and take and spends the taxpayer's money like it’s yours.
These are Mark's words, Hon Vanterpool drew comparisons to the UK government and corruption allegations and questioned if the UK would let outsiders take over their country and run their affairs due to those allegations. This statement is so stupid it’s more stupid coming from someone like Mark a man who should know better. The UK doesn’t have to answer to anyone but itself, the BVI is an OT of the UK and that means that we have to answer to them like it or not. The UK should take over for about 2 years get this place clean up and ban the previous Politicians from running for office again. You guys got away with doing what you like for too long we need the COI and we need change. We are always talking about the UK corruption allegations so you feel that gives us a right to be corrupt. The UK is about ready to break up the party.

This country belongs to the UK and it can take it over when they good and ready and most especially if there are conditions adversely affecting thepeople of the VI. Iwill take my chances with the UK. Maybe my application to lease the seabed infront my house and property will get attention after 10 years. Let the people decide. Allyo and cronies could lease a seabed in 30 days but me cannot even get a response because some in the Gov have their eyes on it for them and their boys for them self. Setta unconscionable backstabbing crooks.

The B.V I over the last 20 yes in particular governments leaders have not proven that we are competent of managing our own affairs properly, nor do we now have the will to do so any time soon.
We live in the British Virgins Islands, not the virgin Islands Virgin Islands. Until we get independence from Britain, we remain subject to their rules.
I have in the past made it clear that it is dangerous to allow politicians to urge you in deep waters, that they can manage to survive, but you can't, due to financial and other survivability shortage.
What I hope for is that the UK at this time will not take over completely, but will oversight our forward direct away from mishandling our cash-strapped economy.
As I and some others can see that some of our political leaders are scared that the past will not be allowed to have a rerun of the same going forward, after the CoI is completed.
Righteousness exalts a nation, sin is a reproach against all nations and people's.
My personal has been expressed above. I urge you to respect same. Thanks.

How about 10yrs? Or 20? Why do you feel you can set the terms of a takeover as you want them to be? The constitution will be suspended far as long as they feel like. Why do you think there'll be quick elections after & if they take control? If you're begging for them to control us, you're saying there's no one capable here, & that can take a generation to fix. I won't be that disrespectful to my own self or to my parents ancestors who fought for their freedom & the right to be educated. Obviously many haven't thought this through.

Did the Hon. Minister say "the UK Government remains shrouded in corrupt allegations, and yet they continue to r manage their own finances ? The thing is they are independent. They answer only to the people. We have continue to run our own finances up to this point even when it was shrouded in the same allegations, person were sent to prison. Here is the thing, we have been doing wrong for so long we have accepted it to be right. While I do not support a takeover by the UK, it is time for us to answer to the people who needs to know the truth about how our finance is being managed. For years now the same people are being given the same contracts. The same people are given scholarships for their children while most of us have to scratch and beg to get anything done.

It’s inane to believe this country can be managed with just the locals. I mean are people incapable of learning over decades? Maybe BVIlanders are actually.

The persons here in government are simply idiots. Each and every single politician this island has to offer is an idiot, simple. This island does not have persons that can take care of a country. The people who wish for independence are idiots as well. Nothing to self sustain but we should seek independence? We are forever dependent on larger countries because we are decades behind the rest of the actual world in terms of merely processing thoughts.

Like that show says, The VI is not a real place. The British government needs to get rid of these highly incompetent persons who think they can be Politicians and make this place better for the actual people living in this behind the times reality.

Has it ever occurred to any of you that the COI and the pandemic could have connections. All of you who crowing about take over might be horrified by the draconian measures regarding the pandemic that might be put in place by the British. Have you ever given this a thought. As bad as they might be our local politicians still have a more personal connection to these islands than strangers with a colonial plan. I have this feeling about the pandemic that we are being fooled into being sacrificial lambs and ignorantly championing the cause. There is a lot to ponder and consider we need to dig a little deeper before jumping to conclusions. With the COI and Pandemic we don't need sad stories when the damage is already done.
