Hon Turnbull claims VIP offered him Deputy Premier's post on elections night

- says he did not take up offer since he is not hungry for power
District Two representative under the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) Hon Melvin M. Turnbull is claiming that he was the first person to be offered the post of Deputy Premier under a Virgin Islands Party (VIP) government, in exchange for him to defect from the PVIM and form a government with the VIP as its seventh seat. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Second District Representative under the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) Hon Melvin M. Turnbull is claiming he was the first person to be offered the post of Deputy Premier under a Virgin Islands Party (VIP) government, in exchange for him to defect from the PVIM and form a government with the VIP as its seventh seat.

Hon Turnbull made the claims during an April 27, 2023, joint press conference with the Opposition Members on the aftermaths of elections 2023 and said despite the reported opportunity to take the first jump, his integrity prevented him from doing otherwise.

“We stood on integrity...I was one of the members that were speaking out and speaking truth to power. I will continue to do that for the people of the Virgin Islands.”

Hon Turnbull added, “While I'm speaking truth, I failed to mention earlier that about 10:00 PM on Monday. I received the first call from the Virgin Islands Party to be the Deputy Premier, so if I was hungry for power I would have already gone,” he added.

Hon Fraser was initially approached - Premier Dr Whealtey

It remains unclear who called Hon Turnbull and the exact terms of the offer, but Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Whealty (R7) has revealed that the initial target of the VIP was Progressive United's Hon Julian Fraser and the Third District seat as the 7th seat to form the Government with the VIP.

Hon Fraser is a former member of the VIP and led the party into the 2015 General Elections, which the VIP lost.

Hon Turnbull added that he stood on integrity in not taking up the offer. “So I shared with my party chairman and the other members of the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement. I cannot say one thing to people and represent something else,” he said.

The now opposition political parties comprising PVIM, NDP, and PU have since unilaterally blamed Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE for derailing their plans to come together and form a government when she took her At Large seat to the Virgin Islands Party.

Hon Turnbull added that his integrity; however, will remain solid moving forward, "I think it's extremely important to always remember whose I am, and I know that the people of the Virgin Islands are the priority and have to be the priority as we go from strength to strength and raise the reputation, raise the integrity, and raise the standard of the Virgin Islands,” he said.

VIP was willing to work with other party members

Meanwhile, NDP Chairman Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) and Hon Stacy Mather (AL) of PVIM have also claimed the VIP contacted them to join the 'green team' to form the next government.

This confirms that the VIP was willing to work with elected members from the different parties; however, they failed to take up the offers.

The Opposition Members have now been sheepishly complaining that the people voted for a coalition government but got something else.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. Intergrity you say? You don't want to seem like you want power? Then pay back that enormous $8,000 roaming charges bill that you racked up talking business and to friends and family. You seemed to enjoy that power. I go on vacation 3 times a year and my roaming doesn't even add up to $500. Intergrity my foot! You should not have come out saying you were offered the position, but so were others and one of them took it! That catchy tune- Lorna in the corner-Lorna in the corner. LMAO!

The New Testament makes it crystal clear that NOT EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS IS GOD’S WILL.

For example, Jesus instructed his disciples to pray that God’s will would be done on earth (Matt. 6:10). If everything that happens is God’s will, such prayer is superfluous. In Romans 1:10, Paul said he prayed for “a prosperous journey in the will of God” to see the believers there. Another meaningless prayer? No.

The will of God for an individual, whether revealed in the written Word of God or by direct revelation, generally comes to pass only when that person understands it and, by his own, acts accordingly.
Rather than sit passively by waiting for God’s will to happen, we must make a diligent effort to learn God’s Word and then aggressively obey it.

God’s will, for example, is that people do not steal, but rather that they work to earn what they need (Eph. 4:28). Very simple. We just do what He says. But are some people stealing? Yes.

If everything that happens were God’s will, then nothing would be sin or disobedience. What a travesty of logic!

There is also God's permissive as well. He allows things to happy so that at the end only He alone gets the glory. EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS ON THE EART IS GOD'S PERMISSIVE OR ABSOLUTE WILL.

NDP, PVIM and PU are bellowing loudly that they were in active negotiations when the Hon Lorna Creque Smith, OBE, At Large jump ship, pulling the rug from under them. What was the tall pole in the tent for the negotiations? Was the hold up about who will be leader of the government business? Did not PU, PVIM and NDP supposedly had an alliance before the election and was there an agreement as to whom would be the leader? Was the Hon Smith at the table during the negotiations? Was the big boys so certain that no one would bolt from the alliance that they made some bad assumptions and ignored some glaring signs? Everyone is claiming now that they were contacted by the VIP . Did they share the contact with the NDP, PVIM , PU planners? And if so that should have been a sign to move with alacrity . What is the truth the whole truth? The alleged word on the street is that a leader from the opposition parties approached the VIP with a proposal to their being Premier and their other members holding ministries. If true, why would the VIP the holder of 6 seats agree to that. Nuts.!!! Did Hon Smith checkmated the boys. Another post said she s….d the 6 men. What ah ting to tell the King. Are the boys trying to rationalize being to the punch? Is not the electoral process based on the the-first-pass-pole concept. Was not Hon Smith first past the pole?

I believe that is what you call proactive, he is a deligent leader. He is hunger to get the country under management. And those who are not hunger and can stay with out, can now give up their seat. Leadership is about a hunger to fulfill a desire to give, to see people , places and things grow and develop in it most beautiful and character.

Pettiness in leadership show immaturity and arrogance in behavior. Most leaders cannot become lions, as they will not know when to use strategies. Do you think a lion chase it’s prey with angry words, and big mistake billboard. Know please take time to improve the dock in Cane Garden Bay. It is the worst dock in the BVI and until it gets an upgrade I cannot bring my guests to our favorite places there. Skirt it. Put lighting and railings. Fix the darn thing! You are costing the community a lot of business as charter guests have an issue with the old falling apart dinghy dock. If I lived there I would be really upset that it has taken so long.... Just do it Mitch!

They did not have the chance to form a Government if Lorna was to be a part of it. It is obvious, she was not interested in any negotiations. She wanted something and went after it - Case closed. It matters not what anyone who was in the room says at this point. What is done is done and those of us who were not present will have all sorts of assumptions.

Although I don’t like the VIP Lorna made the right move because they they didn’t want to form no government around the NDP which was the way to go

Well then since you not power hunger you should have agreed to give Mr. Frazer the premiership.

This guy exhausts me with his constant excuses. I find myself yawning over and over every time I read something quoted from his lips. He is “wearying”.

Hon Turnbull argument doesn’t make sense, a few months ago he team up with the VIP to form a unity government, now he is talking about his integrity why he did not want to form a coalition government with the same VIP. Lack of integrity is to join with the NDP that you part from 4 years ago. I think the Honorable Lorna Smith out smart them.

Are there provisions in the constitution that allows voters who voted in the April 24 election to start a petition to recall Lorna Smith. The title of Hon is questionable?? If there are no provisions for recall there should be. Voters should not have to wait until the next election. Lots of voters feel deceived

Snooze and lose. He got what the duck got and Lorna took the prize from under their nose. All those with voter’s remorse..this is why you check your candidate properly not just what they say the month before the polls. Those who know are not surprised. Neither should the NDP brass have been surprised. They should have been prepared.

Either NDP or PVIM should have taken the VIP offer from the time whiskers started to play the fool. In fact on the drive back from Sea Cow Bay they should have been on the phone sealing a deal with Sowande.
