Hon Stacy R. Mather departs Alliance to join VIP Gov't
The announcement was made just moments ago today, Monday, December 22, 2025, by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7).
“I come before you today to announce a significant change to my administration. I'm extremely pleased to welcome Honourable Stacey Mather into the government to strengthen our ability to deliver for the people of the Virgin Islands,” Premier Wheatley said.
Country above self
The Virgin Islands, Premier Wheatley said, is in a fight for its heart and soul “as delinquency increases, as more and more fall into the trap of criminality, and as some languish in despair”
He continued that the question now is whether the Virgin Islands will remain divided in a “partisan fight” or the choice will be to save a generation by rising to the occasion.
“Stacey has chosen patriotism over party and country above self. I commend him for his courage and look forward to working with him in the best interests of the people of the Virgin Islands.”
According to the Premier, members of his administration welcome Hon Mather warmly and are looking forward to working with him to “advance the building of this burgeoning nation”.
VI will always come first- Hon Mather
Hon Mather, in his statement, said the announcement of his joining the VIP government is done as a “member of this community, as a neighbour, as a guardian, as a servant to our shared home and now as a member of the government.”
He clarified that politics has its place, but his “duty and responsibility” to serve the people of the Virgin Islands comes first.
“Our country will always come first with me. I enter politics not to uproot or divide but to nourish and help build the Virgin Islands into a home we all want it to be. When I was elected, I made a solemn pledge to serve my people.”
He said he has served the VI for more than two years as a member of the opposition and will continue to serve as a member of the government.
A chance to get more done
Hon Mather added that crossing the floor is not a step away from them but rather a step towards them.
“It is a step to get more done for the people of the Virgin Islands. It is a step to accelerate progress. It is a step to ensure policies can be further developed and a step towards resources that can be provided, that can be used to provide opportunities for more of our people.”
Hon Mather will work with the Premier on the Registration, Apprenticeship, Training, Employment, and Development (RATED) program, initiatives in agriculture and fisheries, and the development of community programs geared at empowering community-based organisations to execute initiatives for the upliftment of the citizens and residents of the community.
Major blow to Walwyn & The Alliance
The Alliance was formed in January 2025, and recently, in October 2025, announced intentions to contest the next general elections, with Hon Mather part of the leading three along with Opposition Leader Myron V. Walwyn (R6) and Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2).
Hon Walwyn wrestled Hon Mather from Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) and the now dissolved Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) in a coup to become Opposition Leader.
Hon Mather’s departure from The Alliance is a major blow to Hon Walwyn’s hopes of becoming the next Premier of the Virgin Islands.
It is now unclear if Walwyn will remain as Opposition Leader.

He will HOP his a** right out of the next election!
There is nothing in the Constitution that says you have to be a member of the Virgin Islands Party to serve the people of the Virgin Islands… the party is a members only club. That’s it and that all.
