ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Minister for Communication and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) has called out Leader of the Opposition Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6) for describing the Market Square in Road Town as the worst he’s seen in the entire Caribbean.

During the Continuation of the Twelfth Session of the Second Sitting of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA), on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, Hon Walwyn, while criticising several things in the country, aimed at the Market Square, calling it “mess dot com”.

“That’s the worst market in the whole world, they got more brassieres flying down there than what produce they have. And look at it, we took proper prime real estate to build up some hope and think that we doing good.”

Did he buy anything?- Hon Rymer

Hitting back at Hon Walwyn’s criticism of the Market Square on December 18, 2025, during the continuation of the House, Hon Rymer said, “I don’t know if the Leader of the Opposition is just visiting those places online, as he says he always does research.”

According to the Minister, the Market Square stood dilapidated for years in a flood-prone area, was even being used by vagrants and had to be caged up. The Road Town Market Square was opened in February 2023, following a $1.3 million remodelling.

“To see the buildings there now, he said, it’s the worst he’s seen in the Caribbean. Could you imagine that?”

Hon Rymer added that small businesses are important and in the midst of Hon Walwyn’s criticism, wonders if he purchased any brassieres from vendors.

“He talk about all he’s seen is bare bras, brassieres. I wonder if he bought any of them, support the small business. No, because we must support our small businesses. You’re driving by, you see them, stop by, we have various businesses in there. All you see is brassieres. Go and support the businesses.”

He called it “unfair” when leaders belittle people who are business people.

“They are there for a reason, we’re not a country like that…what is appalling to me is the disdain from these conversations, like as if everything is so bad,” Hon Rymer said.

The ideas is a good one. However, when it rains the businesses are not protected. I beleive that more should have been done to protect both business owner and patrons

You know you made a blunder with the market. Those things look like beach huts and belongs on a beach. I’m surprise Kye, you know you made a blunder. Be honest and go ahead and admit it. A market place does not and should not look like that. There is no protection from the rain, sun or heavy wind. Perhaps if you had sat down with the public and gotten their input it would have turned out better than those beach huts

I second your motion. The other question to be answered is, is the marketplace a flea market for clothing and Avon/Bath and Body Products or a marketplace for organic products Farmers' produce? The math has never matched and will never with this kind of poor leedeership.

When Myron don't have anything to offer that's positive he would talk about everything that is meaningless I wonder if he's ever travel to trinidad and saw the market there , they selling everything at the market food clothes name it they have it selling so Myron stop talk scrap.
    • @Blind Man (21/12/2025, 11:34) Like (1) Dislike (1) Reply
      THIS IS NOT TRINIDAD.

WITH THE CURRENT BVI ECONOMY AND OUR POPULACE BEING MAINLY DEPENDENT ON FOOD IMPORTATION FROM OUTSIDE, ROAD TOW MARKETPLACE WAS INITIALLY INTENDED TO CREATE A SPACE FOR LOCAL FARMERS AND FISHERFOLK TO MAKE THEIR GOODS AVAILABLE TO OUR COMMUNITY.

THERE ARE MORE THAN ENOUGH CLOTHING STORES AROUND.

WHEN THE BARGES DECIDE TO STOP COMING, HOW EXACTLY WILL WE BE ABLE TO EAT/NYAM OR CHOP THE CLOTHES AND OTHER NON-FOOD ITEMS BEING SOLD???

My explanation all along along it should be a large 2 story structure with a cultural design to it something like the straw market in Nassau Bahamas, with probably statue of theodolph or Castro at the entrances with independent enclosed stalls for office and shop to encourage and boost entrepreneurship, equip with public restroom, so that it's equip with myriads of shop selling different things wot agriculture produce and local snack and electronic repair shops, look Myron or any right thinking BVI citizens is right about that market, for that money that little gazebo , if the former speaker of the house was given the job to implement a market he would never come up with that crap for $1.3 million USD, neither Frazer or Myron.

  • Purpose of a market (28/12/2025, 10:18) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
The main purpose of a market is for the sale of local food products. For example local livestock, locally grown food etc. It should not be used to sell cooked food or clothing items. Whomever allowed and approved these sorts of vendors are to blame. The space is an eyesore in the middle of town and not purposeful. It would attract more customers if it was soley used as a local grown food market
