BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI– Having no representative for the First District since the arrest of ex-Premier Hon Andrew A. Fahie in Miami in April, At-large Representative and Deputy Speaker Hon Neville A. Smith (AL) will now temporarily set up office in the district to bring representation to the people there.

This was revealed by Opposition Member and At-Large Representative, Hon Carvin Malone during the radio talk show ‘Talking Points with Violet Gaul’ aired on ZBVI 780AM on Monday, October 17, 2022.

“In a meeting recently concluded, it was announced that Honourable Neville Smith will set up office where he would be there for two days a week and I will continue to move in and out of the district, in terms of concerns, as I have been for the past time,” he said.

This means that for the district there will be a hybrid system where it will be represented both by Hon Smith and Hon Malone.

“But you must understand that we have four At-Large Representatives and each of the four could be called on, but Honourable Smith has been given the particular task, as you may well by now be aware, I moved over to the Opposition,” he said.

Hon Malone to assist in D1

Hon Malone added, “So, in order that they'll have a voice in Cabinet, they have said to Hon Smith well, you know, we’ll like to set up office there and I would assist everywhere that I could,” he added.

Since his arrest in April 2022, Hon Fahie has been trying to maintain a grip on the First District seat through leave of absence to the House, despite his inability to attend HoA sittings in person.

Speaker Honourable Corine N. George–Massicote on July 19, 2022, indicated she will no longer accept apologies from Hon Fahie and denied him leave from the 5th, 6th and future Sittings of the HoA.

According to the HoA Standing Orders, Members who fail to attend sittings of the HoA without an approved notice of absence would have to vacate their seat after three consecutive absences in any one session.

It is unclear why the option of virtual appearance has not been extended to Hon Fahie.

WTF is this BS? These people are entitled to their own exclusive representation in the House. Either let Fahie in or have a byelection. The people of the first district have a right to choose who will represent them.

If your employee under house arrested or in the jailhouse for being charged for a horrendous crime you going still have them representing your company?

Use what little bit of sense you have if any.

I wonder why he needs to set up an office??? He needs to go out and see what needs doing in the district and lobby for it to get done, not go set up no office to listen to gossip and people beg because that is what the office is going to be used for.

Don’t allow sheep to step in. If he wants to be our Rep, he must be voted in by the people of the 1st.

Comprehension of what an At-Large Representative is has become vague in minds full of hatred, jealousy and indecisiveness. How can the People thrive with such disparities.

His intentions are good but D1 don’t need no district office. In terms of priority he needs to do an assessment of the entire district and move with urgency to get it clean up. Like the entire country, D1 needs a thorough clean up. And by the way some areas of focus include the Benjamin Romney Park, the bayside by the community center, the Towers area by the well, under the tree at capoons bay and on and on. In any event, the people of D1 will not be fooled.

You are either a shepherd or a sheep. Rightly nicknamed you are what you are. You have been proven time and time again that you are just what you are called. Sheppy sheep you remember how the wigged one took a paper for you to signed and you blindly signed it bringing lawsuit against coi. Tell me sheepy why did he not ask slowande to sign it. You know why because sheep follow.

All from the West who say the different areas need cleaning up ie Benjamin Romney park, across the street from the Community Center etc. why wait for a district rep to initiate. Why not round up the able folks in the district, and clean up the areas. Do like we used to do back in the day. West End has always been the most peaceful and and one of the nicest areas on Tortola. Let us keep it that way. Don’t let anyone throw their garbage all over the place. Let us keep our West End clean.
