Hon Melvin M. Turnbull suggests Alliance will become a political party

Hon Turnbull, along with Opposition Leader Myron V. Walwyn (R6) and Hon Stacy R. Mather (AL), is part of the three-member faction of the Opposition called The Alliance.
When first announced in January 2025, the members indicated that The Alliance was not a political party but a parliamentary alliance whose aim is to provide a stronger and more effective opposition force in the House of Assembly.
According to The Alliance’s Facebook page, they are “a bipartisan group of dedicated legislators united by a shared vision for the Virgin Islands”.
An Alliance Government?
While they have not confirmed The Alliance as being a political party, during their show, The Pulse of the People, on Monday, June 23, 2025, Hon Turnbull briefly spoke about no horse racing in the Territory, especially as the 2025 Emancipation Festival is approaching.
In light of this, he said, “Whenever horse racing returns, maybe it will take The Alliance government to set it back in place. We need to ensure that area that was set aside for Miss Parsons, that we ensure that, that is done.”
Was it a slip of the tongue?
This leaves the electorate to wonder if Hon Turnbull’s statement was a slip of the tongue or an indication that the three Opposition members are on the path to announcing The Alliance as a political party.
If this is the case, will the three members contest the next general election on a ‘The Alliance’ ticket?
Senior opposition members, Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) and Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8), confirmed soon after the announcement of this Alliance that the members had not resigned from their respective opposition parties- the National Democratic Party (NDP) and the now dissolved Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM).
Hon Skelton in February 2025 said Hons Turnbull and Mather are “just trying to find their way”.
Hon Walwyn had also said then that the door is open to Hon Skelton and Hon Penn to join them in The Alliance.
Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) reached out to Hon Turnbull for clarification on his statement on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, but has been unsuccessful.
