SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI - Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Third District Candidate Mr Kevin C. Smith aka ‘OJ’ has fired back at Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) over statements he made on the campaign trail in relation to Smith’s employment and role at the Premier’s office under ex-Premier Andrew A. Fahie.

In a statement released on April 5, 2023, Smith said, “Hon Julian Fraser, who calls himself the Liberator, on the 1st of April; a day not synonymous with integrity and moral judgment, attempted to misinform and mislead constituents and the general public.”

He added that Hon Fraser mentioned two things regarding his employment at the Premier's Office, which concerned his salary and the terms of his contract.

Hon Fraser blames 'OJ' for Ex-Premier Fahie's troubles

Hon Julian Fraser during his campaign launch on April 1, 2023, said Mr Smith was almost like an assistant premier to Ex-Premier Andrew A. Fahie and was allegedly paid a salary of some $100,000 annually under contract for advice to the then premier, and that he must say what advice was given to the Premier up until his arrest in Miami on April 28, 2022.

"Another guy out there who used to advise his boss...I guess if you advising a man and he go a place, it's your fault right? Answer me, if I am teaching you to drive and you run over a cliff it's my fault because I didn't tell you hold the brakes," Hon Fraser stated, in reference to Mr Smith being an Advisor to the Premier.

Smith while not denying the salary scale in a statement released today, April 5, 2023, said, “Firstly, as a professional for over 30 years, I have regularly been employed at the executive level and have always been paid a salary equal to my role and responsibilities.”

Mr Smith is a former Post Master and in November 2019 became the first local CEO of Digicel BVI.

Advise did not include on Premier's personal dealings- Smith

Smith added that the salary ranges were approved by the cabinet and that he was one of 3 consultants who have been paid at that level, “My engagement with the Government pertains to policy matters and projects which were of importance to any Premier.”

He said whatever occurred with the former Premier is yet to be proven in court and that his job did not include advice or dealings with respect to the former Premier’s personal activities.

Hon Fraser could collect approx $1M in retirement funds- Mr Smith

“Hon Fraser on the other hand has a lot of explaining to do as he voted most favourably for the greedy bill and stands to collect as much as a million dollars in lump sum retirement funds while you struggle every day to pay bills.”

Smith then went on to say that Mr Fraser stands to receive regular monthly contributions as a result of the 'greedy bill' while the people of the VI continue to wrestle with unemployment.

It appears that a number of current members of the HoA who voted for the Greedy Act, and who now say they will vote against it, are not confident of being re-elected — : — and will therefore benefit under the Act before it is repealed.
Let them confirm now that they will not take any sums under the Act if they are not re-elected. Otherwise, their comments about voting to repealing are hypocritical.

…. that Fraser stands to pocket over $1 million if he loses the election. No prospect of him saying that he won’t take it.

Since when $100,000 is any money to pay a qualified professional? Fraser is scared of OJ because he ran him very very close in his prime so he is very worried now that as an Independent Candidate he may well lose to OJ. Instead of retiring at the top of his game, he continues his quest for power and will be beaten at the polls. Kevin will do well as district rep and Fraser knows his days are numbered so that is why he is talking all of that ignorance. The NDP candidate in the race is so clueless he doesn't know what is going on and don't realize that many around him and even in his party are laughing at him because he is being used.

It is no surprise that the Hon Julian Fraser aka the Liberator voted for what is being labeled the ‘Greedy Bill.’ He had lots of company though, for most of the current elected members voted for it. This was all about greed, personal self-interest, control, power, etc. It was we got the power and we are deserving so let’s turn on the spigot at the trough and let’s feed. They cared nothing about how fair it was and burdened on taxpayers. It was a gross abuse of power; the only check and consequence for their gross abusive power is at the ballot box. It is rich and deceitful to gallantly vote for a bill knowing it was self/serving , overly generous, unfair, and abusive and then declare it is greedy and needs to be repealed. That is like deliberatively leaving the gate to the fence open snd all the cows bolted and then complain that the cows got out,

Moreover, how does this greedy bill compare to the regular hard working civil servants, the workhorses, who labor for low wages and difficult working conditions for 25-33 years for a small pittance at retirement. It is all about self-interest, for they took care of their retirement needs first before even considering the needs of civil servants; civil servants were probably not even a passing thought. The civil service needs to be reformed, ie, compensation adjustment, bloat, retirement fund, pension unfunded liability, job description review, etc. But though civil service falls under the Deputy Governor, they run away from the issue with Usain Bolt like speed. Did the Guv have to give assent to this greedy bill? And if so did he just punted? By the way, why is not all candidates speaking out against this greedy bill? Is is self-interest? Is self-interest in politicians DNA?

While you were advising the premier, you should have advise him not to move forward with the greedy bill. The harbor
    is worst than the thief.

Does this mean he didn't? The premier is the premier. He'll do what he wants regardless.
People are blaming Mr. Smith for everything under the sun... the premier going to jail.... The premier being a crony. It's either you're ethical or you're not. Head coach is a big man and as he stated he has been in the drug business a long time. Before Mr. Smith was even hired to be his advisor.

Kevin C. Smith Julian Fraser might have signed the greedy bill but it was the party that you are running with came up with it and most if not all signed if, in my thinking you are not smart to bring that up, some of you need to think before you talk.

I don't mind the greedy bill at all providing that the ones who benefit are BVISLANDERS.
We need to implement ways to have wealth be awarded rewarded and kept within the descendants of our most revered ancestors who toiled and sweat to keep hope alive on this lil lil dry weather dirt heap. Importation and installation of a large segment of the now VI has produced poverty and criminality in keeping with the other Caribbean Islands claiming to be Independent free and Black. In addition, these new imports are covetous and resentful of us their saving grace. They have nothing to give but misery and take take aad contaminate, whatever resource the VI has.
Immigration should be to gain positive benefits and contributions from the imports and to fill in the gaps where we are lacking. T h e VI should not be a septic tank for the waste of the upper Caribbean Islands.
These BVI,where the people owned/ individual owners of the land free and clear, now onward hand in hand with poverty and illiteracy resulting from a majority population of self made unfortunates. We need a good licking and we getting it good.
