DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- Junior Minister for Trade, Economic Development and Agriculture Hon Sheeren D. Flax-Charles (AL) said her New Year's wish for 2023 is to see the eradication of colonialism, among other challenges in the Virgin Islands (VI).

Speaking under ‘Other Business’ during the Continuation of the Ninth Sitting of the Fourth Session of the Fourth House of Assembly, on December 21, 2022, Hon Flax-Charles said while it was a relief that the budget for 2023 was passed, her New Year’s wish includes the creation of better roads, completion of the Trellis Bay Visitor Center and the provision of water pumps for wells at Paraquita Bay.

Hon Flax-Charles added that the eradication of colonialism is also on her agenda to see happen in 2023.

“I will not apologise for being a Virgin Islander, I will not apologise for being a Virgin Gordan. As the famous Calypsonian has said, tell them, I say I was born in this land, I go die in this land and nobody gonna run me from where I come from.”

No 'yes woman'- Hon Flax-Charles

Hon Flax-Charles added that she is not going to be a ‘yes woman’ despite many factions, including persons in the House, disagreeing or having different opinions on matters.

“I'm not against what all of us in here, I think, want, but right is right and wrong is wrong, we all love in our own way, behind the scenes, in front the scenes all over these Virgin Islands, for a better Virgin Islands, not for those of us in the room, but for the people of these Virgin Islands.”

Hon Flax-Charles continued, “I speak when I need to, and I'm silent when I need to be silent. I may not win every victory, I may not win every war or every battle that has fought in this House, I may not always vote with the majority but be rest assured, I am here defending the people of these Virgin Islands,” she said.

During the budget debates, there was a heightened call from legislators, including Hon Mark H. Vanterpool, for the UK to loosen its grip on the VI by ending colonialism and giving British Overseas Territories more autonomy.

It is sad that the leadership is calling on the U.K. to do this, real sad.
Clearly it seems the leadership does not understand or they are politicizing the topic, not knowing some of us understand.

What the leadership need to be doing is educatimg the masses on independence, then calling on the people to get out of Mommy and Daddy house and fully handle their affairs. Society is a reflection of the homes.

I understand that if we can be independent without creating traumas with that ally who brought us from Africa, life is like clockwork we all need each other in one way or another, I wonder how many of us rejoice and celebrate when we were able to have a passport of Many of us in the UK began to travel around Europe for that privilege, our passport is only valid in some places and we need visas to travel to many places outside the Caribbean and where today we go free, a visa will not be required. My comment is about organizing a board of 6 to 8 years of community member without political and economic interest and after that time to ask for independence without trauma so that you can succeed us with some Republic of today that could not defend their country like honesty and today they cry and kick so as not to lose what they think they have or face a dungeon

The BVI can complete and implement every recommendation from that questionable COI process and it still will never be enough to satisfy the UK. Just wait and see. The reality is the UK wants to rule all OTs directly so they can give their friends jobs as the economy in the UK is real bad. If we think we had it bad under elected officials then wait until you are ruled directly by Brits. BVI be careful what you are asking for because you will regret it.

To me the UK relationship with the BVI and all their Caribbean overseas territories reminds me of a battered and abusive relationship where the man keep making the woman feel as if she can do nothing right unless he does it for her and also will never make it in life and do anything positive if she leaves him. This is wrong on all fronts. The time has come to move on but with strong policies and laws in place as is being done to hold all accountable at all times.

Imagine where the world would be if Moses and the Israelites had the same ignorant mentality about coming out from under the Egyptians as some of us have for coming out from under the UK and their colonialistic rule. The more things change the more they remain the same. Remember Moses was not a sugar cake but he fulfilled God's purpose for the people.

That the minister for trade and the premier responsible for trade would focus on the issues in the trade department instead of expecting one person to carry the weight, unsupported, then pretend as if they had no warnings before she decided to resign. A sad sad bunch!

There is another topic that may serve you and the Hon. Minister Mark Vanterpool well and one you should seek to eradicate. .that is the notion that due to your parental link with Caribbean parents you are not a pure bred Virgin Islander.

I’m confused as to why people have faith in these clowns. They have done nothing, will never do anything because they are incapable of doing what needs to be done to better a country. They have had decades to prove this wrong but they have not.

I think the only thing more stupid than these politicians are their supporters, the immense lack of ability for locals to think with their brains is quite amazing on this island in comparison to most places in the world.

The local government will forever be a complete and utter waste of time. They are incompetent idiots supported by an additional set of local idiots who only do it because they can make extra on the side in which ever form you can think of. What a crappy country.

Eradicating Colonialism is a fleeting illusion unless the VI seriously entertain the possibility of going independent. Than that is another Dilemma because John Bull will still have a foot up in thr VI guts.
