ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The formation of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is expected to be on the Order Paper when legislators return to the House of Assembly next week.

The Fifth Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA) is scheduled for Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at the HoA Chambers in Road Town at 10:00 AM.

His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition has been showing great zeal in having the PAC formed and was even trying to force the House to address the matter at the Special Sitting of the House of Assembly (HoA) called on October 13, 2023, solely to honour the heroes and foreparents of the [British] Virgin Islands.

It was Opposition Leader Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) and Opposition Member Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6) who surprisingly attempted to force an amendment of the Order Paper.

After some deliberation as to whether notice for the motion was needed or not, Hon Skelton withdrew it.

‘No effort to avoid forming PAC- Premier

Ahead of the withdrawal, the Premier assured the House that forming a PAC was not something his government was avoiding.

“I want to let the Opposition know, that there is no effort to avoid forming the PAC. While they are quite anxious to get it formed, I would just kindly ask that today we deal with the matter of the national heroes and leave that [PAC] for the next sitting,” he said.

The PAC is an important institution of the local House of Assembly as it provides the necessary checks and balances for the Executive in an effort to uphold tenants of accountability, transparency, and good governance in public office.

We would be ASTONISHED if all 13 elected members physically appear on Halloween. No doubt some will be off island attending robot conventions or yacht shows.
