BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Social and political commentary Pastor Claude O. Skelon-Cline has once again put members of the House of Assembly (HoA) on blast, this time, for coming to the House late.

Speaking on his weekly show ‘Honestly Speaking’ on ZBVI 780 AM, on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Pastor Skelton-Cline, visibly irritated, spoke directly to the HoA members.

“We’re receiving an abundance of complaints of House of Assembly being on time, as it is supposed to be set.”

HoA is your first priority

He told HoA members they were elected by the people of the Virgin Islands to the House of Assembly, and that should be their first priority.

“What you should understand as your first priority is that you, all thirteen of you, were elected to the House of Assembly, not to a ministry, not even to Premiership, the House of Assembly. That’s the priority, that’s the crystallisation in legislation, you’re conducting the people’s business.”

Pastor Skelton-Cline advised that if the sitting of the House is scheduled for 10:00 AM, it should begin at 10:00 AM.

“You are not at liberty to consistently be violating the House of Assembly at a time when you are to conduct the people’s business. I ought to be able to go on Facebook page or the YouTube channel or the radio station, or wherever at 10:00 AM at that designated time, and House of Assembly is commencing.”

He said pastors are often invited to pray at the start of a session; however, when they show up on time, they are often left waiting for hours.

“Disrespecting the people, disrespecting the one who you have assigned the ecclesiastical assignment, sits there, waits and then he takes off, then they call him and say, ‘Can you come back and pray?’”

Skelton-Cline said he would have said no to returning to the House, adding,  “Not only am I not coming back, I’m not accepting any more invitations back when you are going to disrespect.”

If you can’t honour time, how can you honour your word?

He said HoA members must understand this as being “derelict in respecting and honouring” not only their time but also other people and the country’s time, work, worth and value.

“It speaks volumes about how you think about us.”

Skelton-Cline added that you can only build pride and a nation, develop a country and show maturity and growth by first honouring time.

“If you can’t honour time, how are you going to honour your word?  We got to do better than this…I speak on behalf of majority of people in the country as it relates to this particular subject.”

He reiterated that as elected members of the House of Assembly, the main responsibility and “chief job” is to be a legislator.

I understand that they're inviting pastors to pray. However, can't anyone of them pray or they're afraid that God wouldn't hear them? They can do better in their lifestyles and take turns leading in prayer. Righteousness exalts a nation.
It's time our leaders live Godly lives or lives that exemplify righteous principles. No wonder our country is in this moral mess.

BVI runs late habitually. Very little starts on time except the Church I attend.

This is the norm in the BVI. LATENESS. Why can’t people learn how to be on time. You all take this lateness as a joke. Perfect example: Last weekend I had a family dinner at my home, everyone was suppose to be at my home @6:00 pm. The ones that was not at my home @6:00pm. and came two hours late were not allowed in. Now I’m labeled as a snobby B by family members. Do you think I care? Absolutely not. If that is what it took to get rid of them then so be it.

CSC is absolutely correct. One of the greatest signs of disrespect (other than putting your flag above the host country) is being late. We have taken being late to a new level of unapologetic recklessness. I don’t know why we have bought into the concept of being fashionably late. Nothing ever starts on time. People need to start being locked out of venues for being late… regardless of who they are! What example are you setting as leaders? What’s also disturbing is the pomp and arrogance the accompanies the lateness. Time is time and if you’re on time you’re already late. BVI it is time to get your house in order
