DUFF'S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- The Fourth Sitting of the Fourth Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) will continue this morning, Thursday, July 14, 2022, at 10:00 am at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff's Bottom, Tortola.

The Sitting will continue with the debate on the controversial Register of Interests Act, 2022, which has sparked much opposition from some members of the community and elected officials.

Do people have rights?

The Act is demanded to be passed in the HoA as recommended by the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) report and the Unity Government of Premier and Minister of Finance Dr The Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has decided to accept all the recommendations in the CoI Report without challenge or push back.

The Act is regarded by many in the legal profession as an intrusion of the right to privacy in the constitution, since all ranks of senior civil servants and some middle managers, and even members of the public volunteering on statutory boards, will have to declare their interests.

In a press release on July 13, 2022, the Civil Service Association blasted the coalition government for not coming to the people with the Act and suggested that it be placed on hold until further consultation.

The sitting today will be aired LIVE on House of Assembly VI Youtube; House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands Facebook; 780 AM ZBVI Radio; CBN-Radio (90.9 FM); FLOW TV Channel 101; and CCT TV Channel 291.

How is this act in any way "controversial" - if you don't want to register don't stand for public office, work in civil service or volunteer for statutory boards. If your business dealings are al on the up and up then you should have no problem declaring them.

This draft ROI law 'controversy' is being contrived by those with the most to lose upon its future enforcement. Any deliberate delay will trigger suspension of the BVI constitution, HOA dissolved and UK direct rule. Transparency decision time has arrived in the BVI.

The UK are jealous of the prosperity of our people and our country. They want us to start thieving cheese and butter like those in the UK, this is after they brought hardship on their people. They can't even control what is going on in their own country.

WE WANT THE FSC TO LOOK INTO THESE BANKS AND OUR BANKING SYSTEM IN THE BVI SO THAT THE GENERAL PUBLIC CAN HAVE SOME SORT OF RELIEVE . EITHER THAT OR WE NEED MORE BANKS IN THE BVI BECAUSE IT SEEMS THAT THE 5 MAJOR BANKS CANNOT SERVICE 30,000 PEOPLE EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIANTLY AND THE PRODUCTS THEY ARE OFFERING IS NOT FOR THE MIDDLE AND LOW INCOME CLASS.

Both banks and insurance companies need reassessing by FSC. Especially the insurance companies with their behavior after Hurricane Irma by claiming people were under insured and not paying out.
