HMP inmate allegedly makes death threats to prison officers & families

BALSAM GHUT, Tortola, VI- Some officers at Her Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut are said to be concerned for their safety as well as their families, following death threats made to them by at least one inmate.

According to reports, prisoners are said to be unhappy with a random search on June 2, 2021, that resulted in a number of their possessions, including cellphones, laptops and tablets, being seized.

The random search, which had reportedly targeted cells of hardened criminals and others on remand pending trial for murder, guns and drug crimes, had followed the stabbing to death of Nickail Chambers on May 30, 2021.

All in-person visitations to the prison were also suspended until further notice.

It is alleged that one of the inmates called the names of a number of prison officers with threats, indicating that he knows where the officers, their families and other loved ones live.

Police are said to be investigating the reports.

      It’s about time the Government send some of those types of prisoners to UK to spend their sentence. It’s obvious that the security of the prison is out of our control. Those guards will quake under pressure and threats. Send prisoners where they can be reformed as here is not the place.

      Add more years or a second life t e r to his sentence and ship him out to the UK or to place of his/ ancestral origin. Ban visas or increase visa fees from that place.

          There are countries in the caribbean from where the human import is not worth the expense by the importing country. Manual labour and skills which the BvI import from the Caribbean islands come a dime a dozen..just one of their criminals cost more than they are worth,not to mention school and hospital and the adverse quality of life to the community. Banning visas from places that has contributed lifers and longterm freeloaders in Balsam would be cost effective. Nowhere in the Caribbean gives these VI a fair exchange . Insult for our genorosity is all. We don't even have prisoners ,burdensome expats in their countries to exchange.

      That’s one of nature’s little secrets tho...A prison hotel.We need tougher/ brutal guards to get those guys in line.. And if ever a treat is sent out from someone inside and is successful, we should bring back the death penalty just for those persons. You want to kill while in jail because you already there?.. well go home then. And no long waiting either, quick!. I bet they would get it together!

    Investigate the investigator the unit was at worst under her and the holy one, all the bulliyng and violence under there watch witch they allowed to build up for over a year, look all the inmates that got beaten and estorted that was held hostage she sat on the info and did nothing, where is the accountability for them both?

    Some of those inmates out of place and are dam right ungrateful ingrates. But what you allow is what will continue. It's obvious there was/is a slack attitude with discipline at that institution. What has management/government done over the last two years? Threatening peoplevover a cell phone and lap top is no joke, but the ignorance is bliss. If you cannot do the time do not do crimes.

    A lot of u all talking but u all on the outside when officers correcting inmate with they wrong doing and charging them there parents coming up balo cussing and telling officers go back were they come from they behaving like is the officers send them to jail parents even bring rum and weed in there food for them so who to blame none ppl must know the 2 side of d coin before passing remarks on inmate and officers it have inmate don't be in nothing just want to serve there time and go doing something constructive with them time

    This jail is a HOTEL. They need to be in one set of clothes and flip flops like all jails. The staff are the ones bringing in the electronics and drugs. The inmates are paying them. Money talks to look the other way. They need a strong mind person and very firm that believes in strict discipline to run the prison. It should be like how the old jail used to be in town. Tortola has gone to the dogs. It's so said of the people that is running the island they don't know what there doing. They are only for themselves and getting money. They aren't doing nothing for the people of the island. Tortola used to be a good place to go vacation, but not anymore. I haven't been back there since 2012 and nit planning to visit at all. Fix the jail and the island.
