BALSAM GHUT, Tortola, VI- Multiple sources associated with His Majesty’s Prison (HMP) have reported to our newsroom that the prison is currently in chaos.

The Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9), and the United Kingdom (UK) appointed Governor Daniel Pruce have shared responsibilities for the prison. The Minister is responsible for administration, while the Governor handles security.

Violence against other inmates

However, many have alleged that the prison service is in chaos. There is growing violence being perpetrated against some inmates, and within the past 24 hours, it was reported that an inmate (whose name we have but will not disclose at this time) slapped another inmate.

It is unclear if any action will be taken or if the prisoner will be charged for this alleged physical altercation.

Word reaching us is also of alleged extortion of an inmate for food, with no officer doing anything about the situation.

In addition, it is also reported that a small group of prisoners are intimidating prison officers and other inmates, with little or no corrective action taken.

One source noted that “the principal officer in charge of that wing is an African and he is afraid of the prisoners”.

Locals are shut out, no room

Another issue is that locals are being shut out of jobs and promotions at the prison.

Currently, most of the applicants and new hires are Africans (friends of senior officers) and residents from the region, including Jamaica and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Most of the locals there are 'acting' and are given a hard time for confirmation from their supervisors, who are usually expats.

The Head of the Prison is UK national Jay Kendall, with Jamaican Mr Raymond B. Grant serving as Deputy Superintendent.

Attempts to reach Mr Kendall for comment on these allegations were not successful.

We playing around with the fate of our nation because of greed allowing expats to continue to pour in and overrun and outnumber us taking over almost every part of our workforce like nobody here capable of doing anything wether the job big or small. We going to stay there playin friend with everybody fraid to deny anybody like bvi is for everybody until bvislanders are second class citizens in bvi. Every year we have a set of graduates; where they going to work when you letting everybody import an expat to do any little thing. Some of these businesses whole staff is expats. Then you wonder why the youths unemployed idle on the side of the road joining gangs and stealing, selling and using drugs and shooting and stabbing each other in the street life. Expats done make up more than 70% of our workforce it’s like lord man when is enough what is the ratio we aiming for 80%? 90%? It’s getting ridiculous now. Not to mention our culture disappearing as a result as well.

They are here but it’s not so easy to find BviIslander’s that after a couple of weeks of hiring, keep working with enthusiasm and stay off the phones.

Locals are not being shut out, LOCALS DON'T WANT TO WORK, especially in places like the prison and police. Also yall need to realize most islanders are related, they have family in the jail...anybody with common sense knows that's a huge security risk.

There should be a limit on the number of locals working in the prison, as having too many officers with close personal ties to the prisoners and community can create conflicts of interest and increase the risk of undue influence, bribery, or compromised decision-making

Just like Tola have lazy people and have family ties that pose risk, there are lazy expats too! Besides that, the expats get in with the locals cajole and mix-up, friend-up and create close relationship with the locals and are the ones that are giving out information. Do not be fooled, they keep saying these things to keep the locals out, when they know they have their own bad seeds and are the ones making problems for people.

Why is it quick to make judgement about why hire soo many expats , HMPS currently has many local officers and they’re the ones that always call in sick and late , just to give a little idea a local female offi*er just shows up to work collect a salary , complains so she cant open the gate because of medical reasons , another one can’t climb stairs and they’re all locals and feel entitled . So be easy on the expats it’s been some long rough years working there
