BALSAM GHUT, Tortola, VI- Multiple sources associated with His Majesty’s Prison (HMP) have reported to our newsroom that the prison is currently in chaos.

The Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9), and the United Kingdom (UK) appointed Governor Daniel Pruce have shared responsibilities for the prison. The Minister is responsible for administration, while the Governor handles security.

Violence against other inmates

However, many have alleged that the prison service is in chaos. There is growing violence being perpetrated against some inmates, and within the past 24 hours, it was reported that an inmate (whose name we have but will not disclose at this time) slapped another inmate.

It is unclear if any action will be taken or if the prisoner will be charged for this alleged physical altercation.

Word reaching us is also of alleged extortion of an inmate for food, with no officer doing anything about the situation.

In addition, it is also reported that a small group of prisoners are intimidating prison officers and other inmates, with little or no corrective action taken.

One source noted that “the principal officer in charge of that wing is an African and he is afraid of the prisoners”.

Locals are shut out, no room

Another issue is that locals are being shut out of jobs and promotions at the prison.

Currently, most of the applicants and new hires are Africans (friends of senior officers) and residents from the region, including Jamaica and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Most of the locals there are 'acting' and are given a hard time for confirmation from their supervisors, who are usually expats.

The Head of the Prison is UK national Jay Kendall, with Jamaican Mr Raymond B. Grant serving as Deputy Superintendent.

Attempts to reach Mr Kendall for comment on these allegations were not successful.

Yes. With no proper vetting process prison and police). As long as it isn’t a local, they picking them up. NO TRAINING, NO EXPERIENCE IN CORRECTIONS. And then they want to clean up the prison and the police force? Nonsense!!!!! Btw, prison just hired a set with absolutely no vetting and training.

We playing around with the fate of our nation because of greed allowing expats to continue to pour in and overrun and outnumber us taking over almost every part of our workforce like nobody here capable of doing anything wether the job big or small. We going to stay there playin friend with everybody fraid to deny anybody like bvi is for everybody until bvislanders are second class citizens in bvi. Every year we have a set of graduates; where they going to work when you letting everybody import an expat to do any little thing. Some of these businesses whole staff is expats. Then you wonder why the youths unemployed idle on the side of the road joining gangs and stealing, selling and using drugs and shooting and stabbing each other in the street life. Expats done make up more than 70% of our workforce it’s like lord man when is enough what is the ratio we aiming for 80%? 90%? It’s getting ridiculous now. Not to mention our culture disappearing as a result as well.

There should be a limit on the number of locals working in the prison, as having too many officers with close personal ties to the prisoners and community can create conflicts of interest and increase the risk of undue influence, bribery, or compromised decision-making

Just like Tola have lazy people and have family ties that pose risk, there are lazy expats too! Besides that, the expats get in with the locals cajole and mix-up, friend-up and create close relationship with the locals and are the ones that are giving out information. Do not be fooled, they keep saying these things to keep the locals out, when they know they have their own bad seeds and are the ones making problems for people.

Why is it quick to make judgement about why hire soo many expats , HMPS currently has many local officers and they’re the ones that always call in sick and late , just to give a little idea a local female offi*er just shows up to work collect a salary , complains so she cant open the gate because of medical reasons , another one can’t climb stairs and they’re all locals and feel entitled . So be easy on the expats it’s been some long rough years working there

Long story short are you guys aware of a thing called conflict of interest ? Imagine a prison full of many local officers think about what can happen when everybody is cousin , aunty , brother , sister cousin and related to each other in such a small place , ok that’s a lot of favors doing for family huh ? , and then what happens bigger risk

Mr Governor get some serious English prison officers to get the prison system in controll, and the inmates making trouble send them out to England prisons.

From a local pris*on off|{€R , and I would just like to put this out there as a born and raised Bv| human , it’s really the locals that making it bad for themselves because the nature of this job requires applicants coming with a background training and experience in either police or security experience for this kind of job . So tell me how many locals that have been working in the security or police industry to gain such experience to have stand a chance to be hired , yet yall here bashing the expats , like the same jobs yall class for the expat dogs such as T@p Priority and other security companies , those same security experience can help to go a long way when applying for this job , how many locals have worked as a security officer to gain such security training that can take you a long way when applying for this job . I see this post to be negative because of all the positive things Mr K€nd@ll have been doing for the time he have been brought in to HMPS . I say kudos to you Sup it’s not easy and u can’t please everyone but you have brought HMPS from very far from what it used to be . Many of us meh be appreciative of what you have done and continue to do in the near future and then theirs the negative ones that be amongst us that’s going to criticize all the greatness you are doing . But put them to do just a small faction of what you have done they won’t make it

This blame lands squarely on Labor Department. They are the ones approving these work permits like they giving out candy. The locals are not giving an opportunity even if they are qualified.

Is this News? How is this News?
It's really sad... A place that has South Islanders working tirelessly to safe guard the entire Virgin Islands, Where? Not their homes? They are expa... send them home... A team of workers who risk their lives every day some have even gotten shot while performing their duties.. working hard and still under paid.. A place that is always short staff begging for BVI LANDERS. Some people putting hours of overtime, risking lives entering over populated units trying to serve n protect....
... The BH, .they know why tjey don't want to work there... Look around the very tppers are corrupt....u know the big ones check the history... Besides the cash flow is too small and too slow...the microwave cash is what is needed... Less u want to be put on the prisoner's pay roll but wait there ain't much anymore since I heard of the liqudation of the bank opposite of the East... Way too slow....
Hats off to the bravery of the men and women who have worked and are working tirelessly behind these open fence.
Continue to trust in God... He will shelter you from harm as you join hands with HIM to help give these young men and women a second chance...a better way to view life...4get the empty barrels....
Husband n wife fight, brothers n sisters fight, mother and daughters fight, fathers n sons fight, neighbours fight...
So how is it that a set of strangers living in a small cell cannot have disputes

Check on your locals being bribe to sell land under the table. When you look signs no trespassing , private dock n dingy u can't even access your own natural resources....sad! Shame!
And check on the Roads people have to drive on from point to point. Especially leading to the prison. Millions poured into road works and this the results....check the diverted route, that alone is depressing, almost every prison Guard hv to acess that route even some of those who live East....SAD!! GO find something constructive to come here n talk bout... stop blaming others for your failuers when you only give them crumbs from your table.....they took the crumbs and the ashes and turned them into beauty...one man's trash is another man's treasure...

"Conflict of Interest", I don't agree!

SO, because I'm a Belonger, everywhere I wuk, if a family member works there or is in a position of conflict at that given area or space, I cannot perform my duties, in the best capacity of the given employer?

    I can't agree!

    Then, it means that, every Belonging icashier in the supermarket, gives the food away to Belongers; every Belonger in the medical profession, give services away to Belongers, without charges; every Belonger, in the legal profession, gives away free advice to Belongers;

YOU SEE, that type of thinking right there, is dangerous in nation building!

Never should we feel, that our people should be marginalized from any position, in this country!

    HIRE US,Premier, in the prisons!

OORR, at least, see to it, that there is a percentage of positions, available for Belongers!

This made the news because of a local lazy officer thats only their for the $$$ and doesn’t take pride in doing their job and when they see others working hard and giving it their all .. so when the lazy ones see the expats being promoted they get mad cause that’s only time when ayo realize ayo from here ? Why not act like ayo care about your country , expats success going forever mad yall because of yall lazy mentality . Many of ayo have no drive to work just there looking down on expats and calling ppl all sort of names and making trouble in the job , always busy discriminating others on the workplace and watching the work but not trying to help make the place better . As far as I know the prison doesn’t have this problem that made it to the news and who ever took it should be held accountable for such false information cause clearly it’s a local officer that’s being in their feelings about who holding positions and being promoted . Work on yourself then things will go in high favor of you

    1. All Prisons have conflicts. VIHMP is the best it has been in years.
    2. BVI Islanders don't be applying to work Prison nor police.
    3. If you 'from here' you more than likely related to someone in the jail or someone who going go jail. Toooooo many security risks. It has been proven over & over (the public wouldn't know & some just wouldn't care about that)
    4. Apart from immigration and customs, show me which establishment don't have expats???????? Aryo be quick to dislike expats & find all kinds ah faults, give them a hard time yet they the ones be working working. Without them the BVI workforce would be very much non existent.
    5. An islander would be quick to tell you 'I FROM HERE' & walk off the job the minute something not going their way. This is why MANY establishments prefer & will forever prefer to hire an expatriate.
