HLSCC Lecture to Link Voices of the Past to the Future of Education
To mark this event the College’s Virgin Islands Studies Institute presents a public lecture by Dr. Charles Wheatley OBE. Residents are therefore invited to attend and learn more about the many persons that influenced the educational system of the Virgin Islands.
The lecture titled, “Voices of the past who sowed the seeds for a Culture of Excellence in the Virgin Islands Education System”, will explore the growth and development of education in the Virgin Islands from the late 1800s to the present.
Dr. Wheatley will also highlight the various benchmarks in educational development including legislation and Policy: Developing a culture of policy development, leadership and Management, Developing a Culture of effective leadership. The others will be curriculum; Developing a culture of responding to work force needs and Financing Education: Developing a culture of accountability.
As Chairman of the Board of Governors, Dr. Wheatley oversees the functions of the board and the management and supervision of the college’s activities. Dr. Wheatley has also served in various capacities in the Virgin Islands’ educational system. He is a former teacher, head teacher and principal of the then BVI High School, Chief Education Officer and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Education and Welfare and former President of the HLSCC, a position he held for 15 years.
According to Dr. Angel Smith Director of Virgin Islands Studies at HLSCC and Coordinator of the lecture series, this lecture is very timely as it affords us an opportunity to learn from the past as we strive to continually improve our education system. Dr. Smith encourages anyone who has an interest in the future of these Virgin Islands to attend the event.
The lecture will be held on the grounds of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College on Tuesday March 12, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.
