ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Wearing cheeky smiles and ‘authorised’ extravagant hairstyles mostly befitting rock stars and festival revellers, students and even some teachers of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School in Road Town, took full advantage of the lifted hairstyle barrier just for today Friday October 28, 2011.

The occasion was the school’s monthly fundraising initiative, held under the theme “Hilarious Hair Day”.

The excited students were not the least bit shy of the camera as they were most eager to have Virgin Islands News Online take their photographs. Among the popular styles were Mohawks, some of which were very colourful, afros and even locks. The hairstyles were complemented with hair paraphernalia, dark glasses and a few creative outfits.

The theme, which was an idea by Assistant Principal Orlandette Crabbe, proved to be a hit with students, who by all means seemed to have done a fine job of selling the idea to their parents in order to get their two dollars to be able to participate.

“We normally have a dress up day on a monthly basis but one of the Assistant Principals, Mrs Crabbe came up with the idea to have a theme, hilarious hair day where students not only dress up but do something hilarious with their hair,” said Principal Marieta Flax-Headley.

The Principal further said the school has to come up with innovative ways to raise funds to offset expenses incurred at the last graduation exercise. She said the school bill was almost $9000, which went towards prizes for students. “We tried to at least give each child a set of books and we had 86 graduates last year. It is a very big school and we can’t depend on Government for everything. Normally members of the community support the school but they weren’t as generous this year, I guess because of the economic downturn among other things. So we have to still pay off our bills so we have to find ways to generate funds,” Ms. Flax-Headley said.
