High Surf advisory in effect for VI until Thursday, March 7, 2024

A high surf warning, which means that dangerous battering surfs of over 3 meters or over 10 feet will affect some coastlines in the warning area, producing hazardous conditions, is in effect for the Virgin Islands. Photo: VINO/File
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Decreasing moisture levels in the atmosphere, as a high-pressure ridge pushes into the area, will gradually restrict shower activity over and around the islands during the next 24 hours in the Virgin Islands Today, March 4, 2024.

As such, as High Surf advisor is also in effect for the VI s Until Thursday, March 7, 2024, according to the Department of Disaster Management (DDM).

Weather today: Partly cloudy skies initially with a 40 percent or moderate chance of brief passing morning showers, becoming partly sunny in general thereafter.

Weather tonight: Fair to partly cloudy and cool conditions with a 20 percent or slight chance of a brief overnight shower.

Winds: East-northeast at 15 to 26 km/h or 9 to 16 mph with lighter spells overnight..

Seas: 1.8 to 2.8 metres or 6 to 9 feet, with northeasterly swells reaching 1.8 metres or 6 feet.

Sunset today:  6:26 pm.

According to DDM, rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the sandbar and near structures such as groins, jetties and piers.

"If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help," DDM advised.
