ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Heroes and Foreparents Day, according to Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), is not simply a holiday; it is a sacred moment of remembrance and gratitude.

Further, according to Premier Wheatley, it is a day to reflect on the sacrifices and struggles of those who paved the way for the freedoms, opportunities, and progress we now enjoy.

"They endured hardship and uncertainty, yet they stood firm in faith, in love of country, and in the belief that a brighter future was possible for generations to come," Premier Wheatley stated in his message to the territory on Heroes and Foreparents Day, being celebrated today, October 20, 2025.

Today, Premier Wheatley said, is a day to pause to honour the strength, courage, and vision of those whose shoulders we stand upon, our heroes and foreparents.

Names that 'echo through our history'

"We remember and celebrate the names that echo through our history—those who have been officially conferred with the title of national hero for the first time in our history: Shelly Martin, Augustus McCleverty, Pereen Georges, Henry Garnett, Obadiah Dawson, Theodolph Failkner, Carlton DeCastro, Isaac Fonseca, Noel Lloyd, Lavity Stoutt. Their courage ignited a spirit of self-determination that still burns in our hearts today."

Premier Wheatley added that the territory also pays tribute to countless unsung heroes: mothers, fathers, educators, farmers, fishermen, community builders, all who worked tirelessly to shape the Virgin Islands into the strong, proud territory we call home.

This year, Heroes and Foreparents Day coincides with the first observance of Diplomatic Week in the Virgin Islands. "This provides an ideal opportunity for us to reflect on the remarkable journey of the Virgin Islands and the role international relations and diplomacy have played in shaping our destiny. Indeed, the work of past and current BVI diplomats and foreign service staff have situated our young nation within the global community, and these achievements have been critically interconnected with our development and progress."

For Virgin Islanders, it is a time of reflection, recognition, remembrance, appreciation, etc., of and on the pain, suffering, struggles, sacrifices, achievements, etc, of their forebears. For centuries under the slavery, and colonialism institutions, our forebears have endured a system of strict control, stripped of dehumanity, abuse, sexual violence, exploitation, expropriation, deprivation of liberty, freedom, hope, and aspirations; stripped of worldly possessions, treated as an underclass; powerless, noncompetitive labor force, chattel property, dismantling and dispersing of families, slaughtering of their culture, history, heritage, murder, etc.

Nevertheless, Virgin Islands heroes and heroines, an August group, through signature Virgin Islander rugged individualism, courage, and steely determination struggled, sacrificed, fought, protested, agitated, advocated, etc., for equal justice, freedom, liberties, basic human rights, equality , self-governance, etc. Their efforts have been instrumental and manifested in attaining a level of self-determination, projecting the Virgin Islands from a small, little sleepy hollow, poor house of the Anglophone Caribbean, cast as being only useful a bird sanctuary, etc, to a bustling locale with one of the highest standards of living, quality of life, per capita income, human development index, etc, in the Anglophone Caribbean region.

@E. Leonard, here we go again about slavery and colonialism. It is getting sick and tired of being sick and tired hearing about slavery and colonialists. These events were horrific; nonetheless, they are water under the bridge, spilled milk, etc. It is patronizing to harp, harp, about. How many times do we,,the UK, etc have to apologize about them. What do y’all want? Enough already. Things cannot progress dwelling on the past. It is helpful to look towards the future unmoored, unburdened from the past. Why can’t we all get along said Rodney King. Let’s let it go and move on.

When has the UK ever apologized for slavery?!!! Can you tell us the date of this important event??? Listen up, Euros! We’re going to keep reminding you about the horrors of your twisted history for generations to come. How long, you wonder? That long!

Let your offsprings smell the evil stench of their bloodline until God returns....so they will never repeat the evil!!!

@@@E. Leonard, yes, the UK is a bold face, shameless , hypocrite. The Crown/government has partaken in a) slave trade, b) slavery, and c) colonialism. Slave labour was exploited to pull the UK out an economic and social depression,,@ built the UK’s economy, created dizzying wealth for citizens, cast slaves and descendants as an underclass and white UK nationals as the upper class with special entitlements, privileges, etc.. In 1833 under the abolition act, the UK borrowed £20M , which equated to 40% of its national budget, to compensate slave owners . To date, neither slaves nor descendants have gotten even a half- penny reparation, or even a simple apology. They normally reluctantly stated that slavery was horrific, yet time after time the ‘ talking point’ is not to apologize. When it comes to reparations for slave descendants, they find all kind of excuses, ie, would be patronizing, time to move on , it would be unaffordable, slavery was a long time ago, current generations of Britons didn’t partake in slavery, etc.. But what they fail to answer is that the current generations of Britons are still benefiting from slavery. The answer is yes they are.

Leonard, bro, good read. Nonetheless, the Anglo-Saxon would white-washed things, want us to pretend that slavery was not so bad, being beneficial to the enslaved. The colonialists propagandized their intent of exploitation, dehumanization, etc as being on a civilizing mission. Liar, liar, liar…,..pants on fire. Here is a news. Slavery was real. The impact, legacy and pathologies of slavery is real. Who benefitted from slavery? Slave traders, slave masters and their descendants. It is time for reparative justice to make the descendants of slaves whole. The slaves job was 1) be servile,2) create wealth for masters, 3) provide for masters comfort, etc.

Anything left to accuse slavery and colonialism of causing?

The commentary is about fore parents and heroes, not slavery and colonialism but you trying to link both things, Let’s stay on topic and in context. Even if they are linked one thing at a time, so that things are clear and don’t get twisted. There is enough current issues to attack; no need to add old dated things. IMO .

This commentary centers on the fore parents and heroes, analyzing the impact of post-emancipation European governance on the Virgin Islanders and their leaders. It demonstrates how they were systematically deprived of their rights and compelled to construct their society without support from their colonizers; nevertheless, through divine wisdom and their collective strength, they endured. Consequently, so you may visit their news blog today and attempt to minimize their struggles and accomplishments.

You ought to express gratitude to their enslaved ancestors for their role in your existence by preserving your ancestors' lives!

Mr. Leonard, Pan Africanist Marcus Garvey is credited with :” A people without knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots," I feel naked and like tree without roots..Neither at home nor community nor in school nor any anywhere else was slavery and colonialism discussed in any great detail. At best, it was a cursory mention. However, it seems that slavery and colonialism were institutions which were horrific, etc, having severe long lasting impacts on Virgin Islanders foreparents. Why has BVI seniors decided to put a bushel over the slavery and colonialism lamp? Physical slavery over so what is the fear all about? Is there something else in mortar beside the pistle?

Correction: “ stripped of dehumanity “ should have have stripped of basic humanity.

Wow! You keeping it real and unvarnished , digging deep and summing up the slaves’ dismal, deplorable , etc., experience. It is important to note that no other group in the Americas have had to endure the adverse experience and treatment of slaves and their descendants. Nonetheless, despite the effort to control and keep descendants as an inferior underclass, they are ascending, resulting in much grievance ,,pushback, etc, from whites.
