ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Virgins Islands (VI) Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) has not factored out the use of herbal medicines and remedies to treat COVID-19.

Hon Malone, while delivering remarks during the Tuesday, July 20, 2021, edition of VIP Lets talk on ZBVI 780AM, said the VI government is willing to implement emerging treatments, once approved and can save a life.

“Your government is doing whatever is required in order to see us through this period.. we have to deal with here, we have to deal with home,” he said.

Hon Malone continued, “There are persons who have herbal remedies, there are persons who have new medicines that would like to see introduced [and] tried,” he said.

The Health Minister further said that some persons have been introduced to natural herbal remedies which have worked; however, he warned that persons must still seek professional help regarding COVID-19 treatments.

BVIHSA will continue to engage in approved 'best practices - Hon Malone

However, regarding approval of such treatments, Hon Malone indicated that the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) will continue to engage in the best practices regarding medicines after consultation with CDC, Public Health England, CARPHA, and WHO for all that is is possible

“There are emerging technologies, emerging drugs that we would seek to get, the antibodies that everybody is talking about, whatever can work.”

“It is not a magic pill, but if it can save one life, we will make sure that it is here,” Hon Malone said.

As of July 20, 2021, the VI recorded 1,604 active positive cases of the COVID-19 virus, with 23 deaths; the majority of which happened in the month of July 2021.

The Health Minister reminded that COVID-19 vaccination still remains the best-proven method to fight the virus.

Big man, I just went through Covid and fight it off with herbs. This is when you’re too caught up in your own agenda to be a decent human being.
Go and let you doctor make medicines out of rock and see how far that gets you?
God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. Herbs are the healing of the nation.

If we can get the monoclonal antibody treatment here (the thing Trump got that he promised to “everybody”) that would be something.

Exactly, the vaccine alone cannot save you . Even though you took the vaccine or not we must continue to take our natural herbs. The vaccine is NOT a cure , but can lessen your chance of going hospital. Don't wait for government to tell you this and that in the meantime continue and engage in more research. Educate yourself. Try different home remedies. It helps trust me.

Hon Minister of Health, now you're talking! Promote getting vaccinated, while encouraging the people to share their knowledge of the local herbal remedies. I am convinced that both can work together to the benefit of the people and this Territory. It has already been said that this COVID-19 virus will be around for a while, so we need to know what we have here that anyone can use as a remedy. The common cold is treated with local remedies, but persons go to the doctor to get other medicine, as necessary. If COVID is going to be so common, then it will be in order for the Ministry of Health to team-up with the Ministry of Culture to help educate the people about the local bush remedies that can also help to save lives as is the case now. We need to act quickly and with resolve!

Finally someone has put on their thinking caps.
I don’t understand why many are upset about others using herbs if it works or helps it means less over crowding at the hospital.

I know of something that works 100 percent I have used it and also recommend to some which gained the same result as I had.

2/3 days of COVID totally gone.
I ain’t saying vaccinate or don’t I am just saying there are stuff we all can use regardless of vaccination status that will aid tremendously and avoid most hospitals casualties.

The evidence just isn't there yet for using herbs to treat serious infections, even if some are shown to have a positive effect, the mega-dosing or misusing of substances purported to fight infection can have dangerous side effects. The Hon Malone should research before shouting his mouth off and giving the anti-vaxxers more ammunition

FDA has not approved ivermectin for use in treating or preventing COVID-19 in humans. Ivermectin tablets are approved at very specific doses for some parasitic worms, and there are topical (on the skin) formulations for head lice and skin conditions like rosacea. Ivermectin is not an anti-viral (a drug for treating viruses).
Taking large doses of this drug is dangerous and can cause serious harm.

Reading these comments is a scary experience.
The paranoia. The conspiracy theories. The naïveté.
No disrespect to the use of herbs. All for them, in their place. And they may very well be helping those hardy souls with strong immune systems who are having mild to moderate discomfort and symptoms from covid infection. But for all the people with medical conditions such as; diabetes, hypertension, COPD, obesity, herbs are just not enough. This is a medical emergency for them. And it is a community Public Health emergency. Vaccination is the appropriate response to this pandemic. Again, no disrespect to herbal medicine. I am a life-long believer. I appreciate it.
But this is a 21st century problem. Let’s use 21st century medicine to combat it.

I agree with you as it relates to underlining conditions. The focus of care is to stabilize those ailments and treat the symptoms of the virus that cause them to get worse. The vaccine if it works gives one a fighting chance with these in infected because the viral load is supposed to be lower. The concern I have is what is being used to treat the symptoms of the VIRUS itself alongside the already needed medication to control the pre-existing illnesses? Every patient will need to be treated differently. I know for a fact though that NO advice is given to positive patients who have filled in the online form. (except the already established ones of isolation and mask-wearing etc)So what does one do? is the question of the day. There needs to be a treatment guideline from MOH. People can recover give them a chance to do so vaccinated or not. What can one do with positive results that are symptomatic but not severe or critical?

Now have u considered this is good that one can care themselves regardless of what they took
COVID mostly impacts the ones with existing comorbidities soo isn’t good that the ones without these can fix themselves at home leaving the hospital for those that are high risks?

@@ absurd. Please feel to do as you please. No one said don’t drink bush tea or whatever. What I said was that there is zero medical/scientific basis by which to think home remedies prevent the virus from infecting anyone. Zero evidence to show they prevent serious disease or death. And, classically, instead of using civilized discourse, you resort to offensive language, one can only presume because you have nothing to support your assertions. As I said, feel free to do as you please. Your life to live.

People have accumulated knowledge of herbs for thousands upon thousands of years.

Today they go into the jungles network with native medicine men&women to find plants with medicinal properties.

Take it back to the lab synthesize the chemicals or create artificial chemicals that mirror those natural substances.

When it’s in a pill and y’all call it modern medicine meanwhile it came from a plant which is as effect and was discovered by half naked people you would look down upon.

You all who think herbs is ancient folly are sorely brainwashed by pharmaceutical propaganda.

If them ain’t making money off it no research goes into it. If it’s too powerful they make it illegal.

Take cannabis a naturally occurring plant medicine. They said for years upon years it has no medicinal use and locked people up based on this.

Doctor’s supported that. Now we are supposed to believe everything they say without question.

They’ve shown they can be bought and are responsible as medical professionals for the incarceration of their people! by not standing up to the truth of that natural medicine.
