FISH BAY, Tortola, VI- Hon Stacy R. Mather, MBE (AL), has said moving to the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) administration was a difficult decision following the invitation from Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7).

Speaking on JTV Channel 55 on December 31, 2025, Hon Mather said the decision to cross had been discussed following the 2023 general elections.

Mather said he finally decided to move to the government because the Premier offered him the chance to work together on many programmes, including the Registration, Apprenticeship, Training, Employment, and Development (RATED) programme, initiatives in agriculture and fisheries, and the development of community programmes aimed at empowering community-based organisations to execute initiatives for the upliftment of the citizens and residents of the community.

You can’t really help in Opposition

Hon Mather explained that, contrary to what some may believe, as a member of the House of Assembly, there is little you can do to help in opposition.

“It doesn’t work like that, you know, people would say, you’re offering to help. Why don’t they take it? So, I offered my help for about 2 and a half years, almost 3 years.”

He added that when Premier Wheatley came to him with the offer, being the person he is, he had to say yes.

“That's not an easy decision because, as many people have pointed out, there’s not much time left in my tenure, but I want to help my people, and if I’m going to help my people and it’s being offered to me, I should take it. Otherwise, I see myself as someone who’s only criticising and not really trying to help.”

Mather called the decision a “heavy” one that he prayed about, as well as spoke to family and close friends about.

“I understand that, for who I am, helping with a programme or programmes that I have criticised, when offered, it’s not in my spirit to say otherwise because it’s for the betterment of the Virgin Islands.”

While some have criticised Hon Mather's decision to join the VIP government, many have also praised him.

Mather, that's not how politics work! You can't keep skipping to the govt side if your party loses. Govt has to have an Opposition. Its called democracy. You can still ensure that you get things done. Sowande sold you a lie. And you fell for it. So ehen VIP loses the next election you going to cross again? Whoever is advising you don't know a thing about politics.

Are you politicians in the BVI sure that you are helping everyone in the BVI or are you politicians in the BVI making bad matters worse for everyone in the BVI?

Hon Stacy Mather, pure self-serving, trying to rationalize grasshoping behavior. What “ gogligook “ nonsensical 6 for a 9 you trying to sell us. Opposition is part of the Westminster governing process. It is not a place holder agency; it role is to keep the government in check. It is supposed to be the government in waiting. However, it seems the current lot of opposition members are impatient, wanting immediate power, status, etc. Undoubtedly, for them it is solely about self-interest. The hot seat Opposition leader charade is a “ poppy.” It is degrading , marginalizing, the position. The Opposition finish the 24 April 23 with 7 of the 13 seats. Now as a result of disunity, ie, everybody wants to leader, it is highly fragmented and ineffective, etc. The only thing that HoA see eye to eye on is giving themselves pay raises and other benefits.

Hon. Mather your message is factual as we have seen (2) LOO in this current house and no unity on the opposition side with more fumbles than a SNL football game!! Myron still and NDP yet Marlon and him do not display any unity. Ronnie dissolves PVIM and rejoins Marlon in NDP while leaving Mitch party less!!! The Alliance crumbles under Myron’s lack of leadership and constant grandstanding while projecting a faux image of competency as his private investments falter and are bailed out by Action Man.

Hmmmm…..what a tangled web we weave!

Yet in all of that turbulent and messy wash cycle an olive branch was extended and Mather did what was best for his country and not himself. Ayo who saying he’s a 1 termer, he’s a grasshopper don’t know him and his values. He has not joined the VIP party; he crossed to make an impact while there’s still time to work across party lines for the entire VI.

How can a person who is an achiever ‘wait’ for 4 years while watching things fall apart all around you? Mehn GTFOH- opposition is governmet in waiting my left nut!! That’s th e problem wid most ayo do nothing and wait mindset. Mitch been waiting how long? Myron gonna say he waiting for how effn long to be Premier - yet he cannot unite nothing! Ronnie been in this ting for how long and what new at this late stage he gonna bring to the game?

What works is having a strong Opposition who knows what its job Is and how it helps us the People! By keeping the government in check. You effed up big time and will pay the price next election. Sowande saved himself from a string opposition with this move but he also eliminated Mather from being a threat in the next election. Sowande killed 2 birds with one stone Abe this dummy with a female make feel for it hook line and sinker!

Hon Stacy Mather, your left hand is on the opposite side of your body from your right hand. Do you not work it some of the time. Yes, you do, daily. Learn to blome from where you were planted. You are a modern day political betrayer (Judus) just as Hon. Lorna Smith, and Hon. Julian Frazer are.

This gentleman wanted to be on the winning side so bad that he is rationalizing that he was asked/invited by the premier. First thing should be demanded of this gentleman is some sort of apology to the education minister Ms. DeCastro for all his street behavior towards her in the past.
