Heavy surge caused power outage in many areas on Tortola

LONG BUSH, Tortola, VI- A heavy surge on the electricity system resulted in the loss of electricity to several areas on Tortola today, Saturday, August 15, 2026.

The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) said areas affected include Long Bush to Mayaba Estate, along the Ridge to East End, and areas supplied by the Airport Feeder.

The electricity company said investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the surge and the full extent of the outage.

Teams working to restore power

BVIEC said teams are working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. Power has already been restored to the three affected feeders in East End (also powers Virgin Gorda) at approximately 10:43 AM. 

Customers from Trellis Bay to Scrub Island remain without electricity, with restoration expected within the next 30 minutes.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank customers for their patience and understanding,” BVIEC added. “Our teams continue to investigate the issue and work to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.”

      It knocked my internet box offline. Since it was the weekend and no one answered the phone, I had to go to town to report my outage on Monday.

    The thing I can't understand is BVI wanna raise prices for services we pay tax for but quality of service never matched the price now then raising it againnnnn???

    Where was this big solar initiative that would ease the burden on the grid on customers pockets??

    Was the government fav super market made of aware of these upcoming changes to they quickly invest in solar panels??? But will have the same or even higher prices??

      This government cannot maintain things like Solar Panels, just look at the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on the defunct desalination plant in Sea cows Bay.

    Is so fragile and weak our electrical system is..Littlw wind not 30 mph and that caused outages. They need to atop putting all their brains and energy into how to rip us off, how to make more money and focus on how to strengthen the system and the BVI people

    The system is very old just as old of some of we stop spending the tax money giving foreign entertainers and fix the infrastructure poor water service and poor electricity service and we in 2026 not 1956

    Electricity, NHI, SSB, Water and Sewage, Roads, Investments, Admin Complex, DDM, Corruption, LMS, Caps, Immigration Nothing works. But they want to keep raising the prices on everything and waste millions.

    Hear dis ya! Mechanical system wiil experience break down, even with religious preventative maintenance and repair. Often though, the systems are run to failure.; run to failure is a strategy sometimes used for non-critical services. Critical systems must include aggressive, periodic scheduled preventative maintenance inspections, special inspections, timely needed repair, etc. That said, are the BVIEC production, transmission, and distribution systems designed, constructed, and operated with surge capacity, e, surges, areas build out, etc.?

    2027 must establish a differences in our political system fix home first then entertain others not even adequate water system in road town and the system now uses sea water to supply the various villages maybe the sea water dry up

    Fire your consultants... you want high rates but you cannot compensate customers for appliances fried by urrgeular voltage... fire your admin team.
