Seven people including the gunman have died in a shooting at a Walmart supermarket in Chesapeake, Virginia on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, police say.

A man, believed to be the store manager, opened fire and killed six people then turned the gun on himself. Police say that the attack happened at 22:12 (10:12 pm) local time.

At least five people are being treated for their injuries at a local hospital.

Walmart says it is "shocked at this tragic event."

Virginia state Senator Louise Lucas says she is "absolutely heartbroken."

The city of Chesapeake, Virginia, is around 240 km southeast of the capital, Washington, on the east coast of the United States.

The attack in Chesapeake follows another mass shooting on Saturday where five people were killed and 17 injured at an LGBTQ club in Colorado.

The attack is not the first shooting in a Walmart store. In 2019, a gunman killed 23 people at a Walmart in the city of El Paso in Texas.
