ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Wheelchair-bound persons needing to access medical services on Tortola will find it a little more convenient, now that the Ministry of Health and Social Development has acquired a vehicle for this purpose.

This was disclosed by Health Minister Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) in a Facebook post on June 3, 2025.

“After witnessing first-hand the struggles of people in wheelchairs accessing various medical services, the Ministry has bought its first special purpose vehicle to assist such persons. You will no longer have to leave the wheelchair to be transported, wheel right in and off you go. Compassion in action. Service to be announced shortly.”

Hon Wheatley told our News Centre today, June 8, 2025, that the vehicle is expected to be put into service "very soon".

This vehicle is dumb and not spacious at all! He is one person, sitting in there, cramped. They should have a van so wheelchairs can fit comfortably in and out. In the US, they have ACCESS-A-RIDE vans that hold up to 8 regular seats for people without wheelchairs, and hold 4 wheelchairs that get locked into place with the people sitting in them, to pick up seniors and handicapped people for their doctor's appointments. This vehicle looks like a luxury car cramping people in like sardines, that cannot hold a good amount of people, and will have to make numerous trips up and down these horrible roads. Who thought this vehicle was a good idea? Shame on you!

Yes they have 4 seater for a population 30 times the BVI so yeah we dont need a 4 wheelchair seater. Find another issue to try to gain traction on for your 3rd Disrict run

@ Faithful. So we are supposed to be grateful for any bread crumbs thrown at us? Shut your mouth. A bus or van would have been the right choice. Our seniors and handicapped people will be crammed in there like sardines, and they deserve better treatment than that, not a fancy, uncomfortable ride. They can't even take a handful of people at one time, whereas they could have taken an entire neighborhood at once. SMDH!
