BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) and Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Carvin Malone (AL) have dismissed claims that COVID-19 infected patients receiving care at Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital are all dying.

'Panic & anxiety'

Of the 23 confirmed COVID-19 related deaths in the territory, one person died at home while the others passed away while patients at Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital.

This fact has caused some persons in the community to speculate that being admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 is like a death sentence.

“There is a lot of panic and anxiety; persons are WhatsApping me, concerned. They feel that if you go into the hospital with COVID-19, you are not coming back out alive,” Premier Fahie said on the Tuesday, July 20, 2021 edition of VIP Let’s Talk show on ZBVI 780 AM.

“Is that a true statistic, is that correct? Because as far as I know there are a lot of persons that go in and were treated and were able to come back out, but that statistic is not yet out there,” he inquired from the Health Minister.

Premier Fahie said it was also not fair to the hardworking staff at Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital, “but it is being said very heavy, and we should not play around with these things and hide behind a banana tree. Can you clarify that for us?”

'Number of discharges made'- Hon Malone

Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Carvin Malone (AL) replied that the statements in the public domain are untrue.

“We had a number of discharges that were made. It is important that we only take the officials' words. There are recoveries,” he said but noted that the official statistics would be revealed at another time.

Persons falsely declaring deaths

He said what was also troubling is that persons who falsely declaring patients death. This, he explained, has caused families unnecessary heartache.

“I am not sure why people are so wicked, doing these things,” he said.

Here in the BVI, we cannot handle the truth even when it's steering us in our faces, shame on ALL of us.
We have fast becoming a nation of embicile, with lots of MA's and Doctorates rolling around the Territory.

When Covid was first reported here, one unfortunate lady died. Everyone else who had it were isolated ASAP for 14 days, treated, recovered and went home free of the virus. What were they given to cure the virus and why can't the same be done now. Now the vaccine is here and people are dying. Something is not being told to the people to get the truth. Can this be explained?

The strain of Covid that people recovered from when the first person died, and this new strain (Delta) are not the same. The Delta strain is extremely contagious, and attacks the body more aggressively (young and old).

How do you know it's Delta? No official notice was made that it was Delta?

Get vaccinated. It will increase your chances of survival if you contract Covid-19. We keep hearing the deceased were all unvaccinated. That alone says quite a lot. instead of listening to fraught, why not get vaccinated to protect yourself, your family and those who work with. Government should pass legislation to make it mandatory for all residents to get vaccinated unless you can produce a valid medical reason why you should not be administered the vaccine. That is the only way to over the ignorance and protect the BVI from the virus and bring about some sense of normalcy.

I don't know what information you're looking at, but there's a "COVID-19 Epidemiological Summary" that is published that includes total cases, total recovered, total active, deaths etc.

It is said that there is no cure for the virus, what is the hospital treating covid-19 patients with?

There is no cure for the disease but you can treat the symptoms, helping keep people cool, helping them breaths, reducing inflammation etc.

They’re treating symptoms, to ease people’s breathing

You need to get severely sick with Covid so you can be admitted to the hospital and experience it first hand for yourself.

Hospital need a code of ethics...not good 10-15 minutes a person could be dead for before that text get send out and pictures and announcement of a person's death is all up and down the road...Sometimes your own families aint know that their family member passed away.

i think the ventilator is the tricky part ,if its not been use properly ,that also can cause death . they are specially train people to administer oxygen and ventilator usage -- not sure weather the hospital has those professional.

PEEBLES as a hospital, must do hundreds of surgeries under general anesthesia every years. How do you think these people under general anesthesia breathe? The ventilator. That is the use of the ventilator. To assist people to breather when they cannot breathe on their own. They have been using ventilator long before most of you were born. Try to support them and lift their spirit out of the very trying times they are operation under and don't trample them further into the mud. Too much negativity being thrown at them. they are human beings too, and gest what? some of the have covid too by taking care of the many patients they have.

So why they not publishing information on recoveries? Is it to further feed into the fear mongering to get people to take their jab? How he expect to fault the public then that thinking that it is not worth it to go the that hospital since the only stats we receiving is he dead, she dead, he dead, death, death death...they know what they are doing!
    • Nice (22/07/2021, 14:54) Like (17) Dislike (0) Reply
They publish it in the very same document that the deaths are reported. People simply choose to focus more on the total number of current cases and the deaths.

What would help are some clear and regularly updated statistics. It can’t be difficult , we are talking tens of persons not thousands. Currently there are conflicting numbers which leads to rumors and disinformation.

One of the reasons people die from COVID at the hospital is the fact that they wait too late to seek treatment, especially men. Then, some of us have underlying health issues that we don't know about or ignore because we don't like going to doctors (men again).
We are going to get through this eventually. Be positive.

Once you are already sick with Covid-19, what you need is treatment, not the vaccine. The vaccine should have been taken earlier to try and prevent severe sickness and hospitalization in the first place.

Mr premier a banana tree is good to hide behind and eat because bananas are alkaline food unlike your vaccine. We need the statistics of how many was on, and made if off the ventilators. Because those ventilators was killing people internationally until they figured out those machines was the problem. But we here pick it up, Sad.

Just so you know, covid patients are only put on a ventilator when all other options have been tried and are not working. By the time they’re on a ventilator their lungs are already failing and other body organs may be shutting down. The ventilator doesn’t kill them, it just doesn’t save them. Tragic but true.
  • It is almost mind boggling to many of us, and others elsewhere, why so many people that live in the B.V.I chosen ignorance rather than accept proven facts. (22/07/2021, 20:44) Like (0) Dislike (1) Reply
This type of behavior is one of the root cause why so many of our family members, friends, and others is now covid-19 virus positive, some have died, and others will become victims of this killer decease.
Knowledge is power. When knowledge is activated, that is wisdom. Be wise, and join force with those of us that are prolife-minded people, rather than passive and ignorance-minded people. Life is God's best gift to human. Let us fight against the killer decease: covid-19 together with lifesaving proven knowledge, and death denying wisdom.

You are not alone. We feel your pain. We have been there, twice.
Here in the UK, we had 130,000 deaths with covid. That would be the same proportion of our population as if the BVI had 60 deaths. The deaths have touched every family. Our deaths mostly occurred during spring 2020 and around last Christmas, before vaccination was widely available. So we know what the BVI are going through. Fortunately, now the majority of us are now fully vaccinated and the death rate is low.
Gibraltar has the same population as the BVI, they have had 94 deaths with covid, the deaths have now stopped and 90% of the population has been vaccinated. The BVI is further ahead with their vaccination than Gibratar was when the covid was spreading, so, most likely the BVI death toll will be much lower, I hope so.
I have sympathy for the hospital staff who will be under greater stress than anyone else could imagine. I can see that they have been doing everything possible to care for the sick and dying. I wish that all those in the BVI follow their advice.
