ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Zone II Primary School Championships were filled with thrills and spills on Tuesday February 25, 2014, as athletes from seven more schools looked to join their Zone III counterparts in the Primary School Championship scheduled for early March.

Athletes from Althea Scatliffe, Bregado Flax, BVI Seventh-day Adventist, Ebenezer Thomas, Enis Adams, Francis Lettsome, St. George’s and Willard Wheatley Primary Schools all met on the A.O. Shirley Ground Mondo Track on Tuesday vying for a place in the Primary School Championship and conjured up some great competitive action.

Only the top two finishers in each event were guaranteed progression with two further spots up for grabs as the best of the rest, but those places will all depend on results from Zone II and Zone I who have their Meet on Friday.

In the U15 Girls 100m Brittany Williams of Ebenezer Thomas and Leanne Thomas of EAPS progressed automatically with times of 13.52 and 14.34 respectively, whilst Briesly Rabsatt (ASPS) and Nyesha Fahie (ETPS) will have to wait and see.

Williams and Thomas finished first and second in the 200m, but Anasha Fergus (FLPS) and Arismelly Ramirez (SDA) face an anxious few days.

Fergus though made no mistake in the 400m, romping to a winning time of 1:12.09 ahead of team mate Tenniesha Chalwell and Jada Joseph (SDA).

Whilst having to see if she qualifies for the final Joseph automatically reached the final of the U13 600m when she finished second in a time of 2:04.45 to Alisha Hayde’s (ASPS) winning time of 1:51.47.

Hayde, also qualified in the 300m, with a blistering time of 46.44 to lead home Dominique Moses and Angelica Pini, though will have to wait and see if she makes the U13 200m finals after a third place finish behind Xiamora Malone and D’Neigh Williams.

That same pairing finished first and second again in the 100m to pip Zara Brown to the automatic qualifying spots, but Brown will feature in the Relay’s and also the Shot Put during the March grand finale.

In other Girls Field events Malone and Moses qualified from the U13 Long Jump as did Izariah Frett in the U11’s, with a jump of 4.00m. Frett has also reached the 80m and 150m finals.

The Seven Day Adventists 4 x 50m Stage I Relay team had a surprising victory and will be joined on finals day by the team from Ebenezer Thomas, whilst other Relay qualifiers included ASPS and FLPS in the U9 4 x 50, ASPS and St Georges in the U11 4 x 200 and 4 x 100, as well as SDA and ASPS in the U13 Medley.

In the Boys section the Willard Wheatley Primary School pair of Kyle Penn and Shakoy Henry finished one and two to progress whilst Henry also qualified for the 200m leading home Anthony Gordon of St Georges in a time of 27.26.

Penn made it three for three with wins in the 400m and 600m and will be joined by Kalbia Vanterpool and Chadwick Evans respectively.

In the Relays WWPS and FLPS claimed automatic berths in the U15 4 x 100 as did WWPS and ASPS in the Swedish Medley. ETPS and ASPS both made the U13 4 x 100 and U11 4 x 100, whilst St Georges will be joining ASPS in the U11 4 x 200m.

Johari Lacey and Kahleem Lettsome, both of ASPS progressed out of the U9 60m Dash as did Sha’el Lavacia and Kyron Walwyn (St G) in the U11 150m.

The same pair finished first and second in the 80m and Lavacia also progressed in the Long Jump, where he will be joined by team mate Carlyiek Benjamin.

Sheldon Harry (St G) and Jaleel Croal (ASPS) shared the U13 Long Jump with a distance of 4.06m and Wayne Bell (ASPS) strode to victory in the U13 300m, with Croal second.

Bell also won the 200m ahead of Malaki Smith (ETPS), who in turn won the 100m event ahead of Harry.

The Zone I Championship takes place this Friday, February 28th and features Agape Total Life Academy, Assemblies of God – Cornerstone, Century House Montessori, Claudia Creque Educational Centre, First Impressions Primary, Jost Van Dyke Primary, Little Rainbow and Pelican Gate Schools.

At the conclusion of that Meet the final placings across all events will be finalized, with the top 8 athletes facing off in the Primary School Championship.
