GEORGETOWN, Guyana, SA- Guyana has turned to the United Nations and the United States for help as the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, announced a series of measures intended to advance its annexation of two-thirds of the independent South American nation’s territory.

This was announced by the President of Guyana, Mohamed Irfaan Ali, in a television broadcast late on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.

“I have spoken to the secretary general of the United Nations and several leaders, alerting them of these dangerous developments and the desperate actions of President Maduro,” President Ali stated.

Ignoring the International Court of Justice (ICJ) warning, on Sunday, December 1, 2023, Maduro went ahead with a planned referendum that sought the public's opinion on the annexation of Guyana's Essequibo region.

Though voter turnout was low and government figures have been widely questioned by observers, the Venezuelan government said 95% of voters agreed to ignore the court and recognise Essequibo as part of Venezuela.

Venezuela’s advances towards annexation

The Venezuelan president said he had ordered a law to be drafted recognising a new state – the Guayana-Esequiba – where the English-speaking residents would be given Venezuelan national ID cards. He also ordered national companies to begin mining and oil extraction operations in the resource-rich region, and for a special military unit to be created for the region, alarming observers and causing Brazil to send armoured vehicles to its border.

Venezuela has laid claim to Essequibo since it gained independence from Spain, contesting the borders drawn up with the then-British colony, Guyana.

Guyana’s military on ‘high alert’- President Ali

“The Guyana Defence Force is on high alert,” President Ali said in his television address to the nation. “This is a direct threat to Guyana’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence.”

Guyana is seeking support from the Caribbean political community, Caricom, the United States, and other allies while raising the matter with the UN security council, Ali added, while simultaneously seeking to reassure investors concerned that Maduro could imminently stage a land grab.

“You have nothing to worry about when you invest in a country that governs itself in accordance with the rule of law, that stands on the side of democracy and understands what true freedom is,” Ali said.

“So there is nothing to fear. Our international partners and international community are ready to support us. They’ve assured us of their support and all we want is for these missteps to be corrected by President Maduro and Venezuela,” The Guyana president stated.

A 16-member from the [British] Virgin Islands visited Guyana in July to explore trade, investment and enhanced cooperation with Guyana. The VI team was led by the Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE (AL) Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Labour and Trade.

You think Venezuela did not expect Guyana to call on US? Calling on UN is a joke....both Russia and China have seats at the big boys table. Go on...should have left the exploring to Dora.

Well I am guessing you are also misinformed. Guyana has just as much relations with Russia and China as Venezuela. Beside The US China has the second largest investment in Guyana currently and Russia relations with Guyana has been great for Decades and continue to be so, Just not as advertised.

You all better stop let the military industrial complex and American corporate structure play you all and think peace and love and just divide Essequibo 50/50 for it's preservation to both people of Guyana and Venezuela, or else the vultures will end up with your resources under the illusion of military aid, and the people are displace running away from there island like how they finance terrorist in Africa to run the people from certain enrich mineral lands, Guyana and Venezuela will become the poorest in the region so their resources could be extracted by Americans and European companies. All of us has the unipolar ideology if war and america been some bastion of democracy, but splitting Essequibo 50/50 will be multipolar and also protect that area resources against monopoly domination, already we hearing of Guyana corrupt politicians not taxing ExxonMobil to the benifit of Guyanese people, and on Venezuela side hugo chevez dear to go day the oil wealth going to the people, if you want get Americans or white people for that matter mad, is to decide to give any black nation wealth, they think you must remain wretched as black people, Aristides tried to look after the poor because it's resources rich with white companies extracting wealth and america chase him abduct him and install their sweet corrupt democracy puppet. Split Essequibo and blow the military industrial complex and white monopoly capital ot of the water, Guyana president would be in power for a long while if there is war, just like that foolish leader of Ukraine killing his people to give america a edge to get at Russia. Is there a stupid zelenski in Guyana Ali now?

Maduro may be a two bit dictator but is is not a fool, and is far more interested in "self preservation" than pursuing unbridled ambition against Guyana. He knows all too well, that any military move against an independent Western country would immediately trigger an aggressive military response by the Unites States and provide them the excuse that they've always wanted to kick him out of power. He won't risk losing his throne and grip on power so easily.

Guyana have to handle their own problems. America is not going to help Guyana, If the Guyanese have to flee, let them go to the UK. As it is the BVI cannot even help it self.

This encroachment on Guyana’s territorial integrity, national sovereignty, etc., is centuries in the making and when Guyana was British Guiana, a colony of the UK. The fuss is now being exacerbated because of greed, oil and distraction of Venezuela near failed country status. Indeed, the fuss of annexing 2/3 of Guyana’s land area is about oil. Oil makes countries wealthy, powerful, influential and dominates global economies. Oil, the black gold, the new gold, is king and runs things. Developed countries need to oil go meet consumers growing demand for consumer goods. Consequently, the hegemony of big countries depends on oil and countries will and have gone to war over oil. The US, Caricom, among others will come to the aid Guyana. The Monroe Doctrine doctrine will probably not be a major factor in this case, for Venezuela is in the Western Hemisphere.

Moreover, Guyana has hit an oil bonanza, yet it suffers from a resource- curse, ie, it is rich in natural resources but the country still has a high level of poverty. It is is phenomena that afflicts developing but resource- rich countries. This typically occurs because the countries lacked tge economic mechanisms, specific skills, etc for turning resources into abundant output to benefit a majority of the populace. Prosperity and poverty are functions of well, equally, etc, resources are allocated. The spoils of Guyana’s oil must be managed so as to benefit the most people,

please do some research Venezuela has the largest proven reserves of oil in the world on its territory, this is about Maduro distracting his people so he can stay in power

To the Researcher, no one said Venezuela does not have the largest proven oil reserves in the world. Nevertheless, as noted, the annexation is about oil, greed, distraction from the state of Venezuela. Consequently is energizing and stirring the nationalism fever.

Venezuela has the largest oil reserve in the world and is one of the ten (10) largest oil producers. Nevertheless, the Chavez-Maduro governments have mismanaged the oil industry, which is a capital intensive industry( infrastructure and technology, etc), by forcing experienced oil industry personnel out and underinvesting in oil exploration and production. This mismanagement, coupled with lower oil prices, have brought hardships on Venezuelian economy and its people. Consequently, the Maduro government is saber rattling to promote nationalism ahead of next year’s election. Venezuela saber rattling on Guyana’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty will pose geopolitical problems especially for Trinidad and Tobago, a Caricom member, OAS, and of course the US. The US is leading the charge against Russian annexation of Ukrainian, trying to dissuade China doing the same in Taiwan, so, it cannot demonstrate a hands off approach of Venezuela doing the same right in its backyard and on its door step. Oil is another driver for US engagement.

Oil is the life blood of the global economy; oil has replaced gold as money. It is important to note oil is traded in US dollars—-petrodollars. And nations that control oil controls the world. Petrodollars permits/supports the hegemony of the US. Petrodollars must be defended , for if oil is not traded in US dollars, the US’ economy could face a challenge (s). As noted earlier Maduro is pushing nationalism ahead of next year’s election but he is dictator who wants to stay in power so he may not want to push things too far and too aggressively, saber rattling aside, fearing the engagement from the US and others. Nevertheless, Guyana’s CARICOM’s cohorts must come to its defense. An attack one is an attack on all.

@GateKeeper, you got your finger on the pulse of what is fueling the conflict between Venezuela and Guyana, ie, oil, greed, distraction and deflection. Guyana’s move is strategic and purely political. Maduro is operating from a weakened position and unpopularity, so he is trying to boost his political opportunity to stay in power.. He is trying to ride the nationalism horse to be first past the pole on Election Day. Even if the aggressive and bold annexation plan get serious push back from the UN, US, UK, France, OAS, other South American neighboring countries, Caricom, etc, he is trying to show the people he is fighting for their interests.and public good. Venezuela is rich in oil, gas, etc, yet one of its major export is emigration, ie, thousands of residents fleeing its shores for a better life and from political persecution.Venezuela’s brand of tropical socialism has failed; Venezuela is a fail state or nearing being a fail state. Folks, Plop down in the E-Z chair with a cold one and some popcorn and watch the fireworks, the show. Maduro will try to win the election by any means necessary, including playing on the nationalist psyche of the people..
