ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Former Deputy Premier Dr Kedrick D. Pickering has declared that the 2023 upcoming election in the territory will be an opportunity for the Virgin Islands to rewrite everything about its democracy once a group of independent-minded persons takes office.

Speaking during a December 7, 2022, interview with JTV’s the Big Story hosted by Cathy O. Richards, Dr Pickering added that the group must also have a commitment to do good for the VI.

“What I see, in my own vision, is I see a group of independent-minded persons who have a link and a bond which is a commitment to do good for the country, not necessarily, because we come together as a party and our party wins,” he said.

He said, therefore, it is an opportunity for the VI to rewrite everything, including how governance is supposed to happen or even the Westminster System of Government, which deals with a majority and minority in the House and solving weaknesses in the system.

“We actually have an opportunity to rewrite all of that and in going forward, we can utilise all of that to help rewrite our own constitution and write a constitution that the rest of the world can be like, wow, how did these guys actually get it done?"

VI can be a model for rest of the world - Dr Pickering

Dr Pickering pointed to South Africa and negotiations coming out of the apartheid system where a Constitution was created and, according to him, became the envy of most modern countries.

“We should be aiming to do stuff like that, and I say it publicly all the time,” Dr Pickering added.

He said in the VI, future leaders do not have to follow models that exist anywhere but can decide to do what is best for the country and the future of the VI some 51-25 years down the line.

OOps... I am not sure that holding up South Africa's constitution is a great example. Ask the people of SA how things are going there... hardly the bastion of good governance and non-corruption....

If you truly want to become a political leader again, then you mush say things that are realistically possible, not stupidness: Ref: "VI can become a model for the rest of the world." Are you injecting yourself with ignorant medicine, Dr. kedrick Pickering?
Can a bunch of confused, broke, under learned, yapping mouths people become a model for the rest of the world? Use they can, but only in your mind.
