Ground broken on $30M+ Nanny Cay Marina expansion project
The groundbreaking ceremony marked a major milestone in Nanny Cay’s continued growth as the Virgin Islands’ (VI) leading marine hub, a press release on October 31, 2025, stated.
Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), Governor Daniel Pruce, Deputy Premier and Minister of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Hon Julian Fraser, RA (R3), and Minister for Communications and Works, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) formed part of attendees which included other government officials, local dignataties and maembers of the marine industry.
An over $30M expansion project
The event symbolised the shift from the planning stage to the beginning of construction.
“This expansion reflects our ongoing commitment to improving facilities for the BVI’s marine community and strengthening Nanny Cay’s position as the heart of Caribbean yachting,” said Cameron McColl, Chairman of Nanny Cay.
The development, estimated at over $30 million, aims to transform Nanny Cay into the Caribbean's premier resort marina, and key features of the expansion include:
- New 112-Slip Marina – Constructed to the south of the Nanny Cay peninsula, designed to accommodate the latest generation of catamarans and mega yachts, along with supporting infrastructure to maintain Nanny Cay’s position as a world-class destination
- Enhanced Boatyard Facilities – Upgraded boatyard and lifts capable of handling larger vessels
- Visitor Amenities – A new beach, high-end restaurants with panoramic views, a luxury swimming pool, a beach bar, and a retail village
- Community Engagement – New classroom facility for the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College maritime training programs, numerous job and business opportunities for residents, dedicated spaces for the Royal BVI Yacht Club’s dinghy program
Meeting a demand for high-quality marine infrastructure
McColl added, “The ongoing success of Nanny Cay became evident as the existing two marinas outgrew their capacity, and the need for a third marina has become essential to meet the market demand for world-class facilities in the BVI.”
The expansion at Nanny Cay is a response to the growing demand for high-quality marine infrastructure in the region, the release continued. The project, with government approval, is expected to be completed within three years
General Manager of Nanny Cay, Miles Sutherland-Pilch, said they are seeing an increasing demand for larger multihulls and monohulls, and this project was designed to meet that need.
“The new lift and berths will allow us to handle more vessels efficiently and safely, while continuing to deliver the high level of service our customers expect. It is an exciting next step for Nanny Cay and the wider BVI marine industry.”

We keep hearing from these so-called tourism experts from Virgin Gorda and their circles that “the BVI is nearing capacity” and can’t handle more growth. But every time a new marina, villa, or high-end project appears, those same voices vanish into silence. The outrage only resurfaces when Virgin Islanders — the average ones, not the silver-spooned few — stand to benefit.
Where are the scathing critiques now? Why no concern for the environmental strain at The Baths or the cumulative impact of these luxury developments? It seems “capacity” is only a problem sometimes.
Always a double standard when ordinary Virgin Islanders have a chance to benefit.
