Green’s goal gives ESHS the points

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Robert Green's 2nd half strike gave Elmore Stoutt High School enough breathing space to hang on for a 2-1 victory over HLSCC on Friday May 17, 2013 in the LIME-sponsored School League at the A. O. Shirley Ground.

The ESHS boys had gone ahead early in the first half after a strong run from Rafael Savoury down the right hand side. Having cut inside, his attempted cross took a lucky deflection of Chandi Wattley and flew past the keeper, Akeem Boscombe, and into the net for the opening goal.

Wattley was one of a few young ladies who more than held their own for the College against the ESHS boys. Abigail Joseph was particularly strong in the challenge and thoughtful in the passing, which caused the most trouble especially to Jared Younis in a battle for midfield supremacy.

Li’Shiquah Fahie also had a good fast half for the College, who despite being a goal down played with a great spirit, led from the front by Riaul Roberts and from the back by Troy Cesar.

For ESHS, who were relying on the dependable James Felix and Maxcell Dabreo defensively and the speed and skill of Shamoy Thompson, Nigel Charlemagne, Kevaughn Watson and Green up front, the first half did not go entirely to plan as to many fragmented runs went to waste and their passing became a little ponderous. However, in the second half, much to the annoyance of Cesar, playing against team mates and old school friends and seemingly with a point to prove, Green doubled the advantage with a surging run and shot that proved unstoppable.

Roberts did pull one back for the College to make it 2-1, but they never seriously threatened an equaliser and down at the other end Green in particular should have re-established the two goal cushion having held off Cesar’s challenge and beaten the player to be in on goal.

One touch too many perhaps though and he hit his shot wide of the target.

HLSCC battled away to the final whistle without success and the game slowly petered out as ESHS were able to hold onto their lead and take home all 3 points.

Earlier, the College Girls team had been a little shorthanded which meant the BVIFA called off the scheduled game for Sea Cows Bay, but on the upside at least those same girls were able to fill in for the Boys and got some invaluable playing time in what has become a very fragmented Girls League season.
