Gov’t’s clampdown on unjustified price increases ‘simply just hot air’- Marlon A. Penn

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Opposition Leader and Representative of the Eighth District Hon Marlon A. Penn has slammed the announced attempt by the Government of the Virgin Islands to take action to mitigate unjustified price increases as just ‘a smoke screen’ and ‘hot air’.

Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) had announced during an address to the Territory on March 13, 2022, that a task force will be monitoring the prices at service stations and supermarkets in an attempt to protect consumers from price gouging, as some businesses have already 'unjustifiably' hiked their prices.

"I send this stern warning that government is watching and is hereby strongly recommending that persons refrain from unethical business practices," Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) stated during a special address to the territory this evening, March 13, 2022.

The Premier's appeal was directed to those businesses in the Virgin Islands that have not received new stock since the recent military events began in Europe but have already increased prices with the current stock at hand and have claimed that the prices of their latest shipment of goods have increased.

The announcement had received favourable response from the public, who were complaining daily about unjustifiable price increases and the need for consumer protection.

Smokescreen & hot air- Hon Penn

However, according to the Opposition Leader in a press statement today, March 15, 2022, without sound knowledge, proper structures, processes, and methodologies, and without enforcement capacity and legal authority; “the attempt is a smokescreen, simply just hot air!”

According to Hon Penn, Government’s efforts would have been better placed on engaging levers that it controls and can immediately implement to better the lives of Virgin Islanders and offset the very real impacts of current events.

“Why not then establish a temporary reduction of import taxes on specific goods (including gas and oil)? An effective mechanism such as this could be quickly implemented to ensure that savings are being passed on to consumers.”

He also labelled ‘equally as important’ that Public Officers and other technical advisers must be fully utilised to ensure policymakers are properly advised and programmes effectively designed and implemented to deliver their intended outcomes.

“Unlike the failed stimulus programme,” Hon Penn stated.

Effects of war being monitored- Premier Fahie

It should be noted that Premier Fahie had stated on March 13, 2022, that Government has established an Ad-Hoc Working Group to monitor the effects of the war and to recommend measures for immediate consideration and implementation by Government.

According to the Premier, it is to “assist in helping to minimise the economic blow that is inevitable from the effects of the conflict.”

If the government stayed silent you’d crucify them. How can the government ensure that any savings due to lowered taxes be passed on to the consumer? Wasn’t this tried not too long ago with a different administration? Did consumers benefit? No. A thousand times no. The businesses by and large, increased their profits and if anything was passed on to the consumer, it was negligible.

Guess this is a case of famed if you do and damned if you don’t.

Being on the opposition is just not for the sake of opposing every thing the in-power government comes up with: You are still part of a Governing body and why not share your opinion in the House instead of coming on hear talking foolishness. really petty , and we as a people is getting tired of it. Be a part of the solution , not the problem.

black lives really and truly matters: here is a local man who most pulls down his own locals: had 12345678 years to set the necessary protocols in place for the benefit of our people and did nothing

    sorry correction(what he did)
    1. No outcry about your tax 10 million
    2. No outcry about your tax 8 million

For heaven sake try be a bit more positive instead of condemning: join hand & heart to build the future for our off-spring

Don’t collect tax from people pay check and money orders this year. Pass a consumer protection law and do things properly. Think on the poor man, single mothers, minimum wage workers . How the hell are these people making it? The “island people” will soon leave here. And then the pressure is on for these landlord with this ridiculous/unobtainable prices. People have exhausted their savings since 2020 and some has since 2017. Look at the status on how many people are homeless and living in car? Geez it’s sad. Don’t let me start on the Beverley hills housing on Joe’s Hill.

Hon. Penguin, enough is enough. Stop opposing for the sake of opposing. You are making us weary with your unnecessary opposing. Relax, you might get your turn to get the wheel but you are going to become unpopular with your current attitude. Be careful.

It’s all in the name of democracy. For how many years the former Premier endured the same kind of humiliation from the Opposition. As far as I’m concerned, both men were elected to represent and both of them have the rights to do just that. And, since it’s all about promoting good governance, nothing is wrong with hearing the views of the good gentlemen.

Here is a solution to help the people of the country. In hard times like these and what we been through you can give us all one full year Tax Free so we can enjoy our full salary. In that way everybody benefits not like the stimulus where only some get. Sew a seed into your country and give back.

I quite agree with Penn because government increased the cost of living. Electricity is owned by government and they have increased their service. We must now pay late fees plus reconnection fees. If my bill is due on the 20 of the month and I get paid on the 30 and could only pay it then I automatically incur a Late fee. Remember some of us were working skeleton hours fir muchbif the pandemic and hit set back and this is what they did to us.

Ports also belongs to government and they increase port fees including gas. Premier is getting down on people for increasing gas prices on old stock but they did it first and that cost everything to increase because Road Town wholesale and one Mart electricity went up as a result so naturally so will their goods.

You cannot pretend to care about people while calling out businesses for doing the same thing you did because they have no choice when you hammer them they are going to pass it on to consumers. No body cares.
