BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI – Former legislator Shereen D. Flax-Charles has called for more initiatives to honour the late former legislator and cultural icon, Ms Eileene L. Parsons, OBE, known affectionately as 'Miss P.'

This appeal was made during a special tribute broadcast on the National Democratic Party (NDP) radio programme, aired live on Facebook on Monday, June 30, 2025.

Flax-Charles, who called in to the radio programme, reflected on Ms Parsons' contributions, both as a politician and as a cultural ambassador for the Virgin Islands. She expressed her deep sadness at Ms Parsons' passing, saying, "One of the things that stands out for me most is that one of the last things she said to me was, 'You remind me so much of myself when I was younger.' She was an icon not only in politics but also in our culture."

The former Jr Minister shared cherished memories of Ms Parsons, noting her understanding of the significance of Virgin Islands culture. "She was an outspoken woman who was well-respected and loved by many. She will be missed, but it's essential for us to remember what she stood for," Flax-Charles added.

A 'genuine ambassador'

The former legislator who lost her seat in the April 2023 general elections as a member of Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM), emphasised Ms Parsons' commitment to cultural priorities, stating that while some may not have agreed with her on every issue, it never deterred her from promoting Virgin Islands culture.

"Though we will not have her physically with us, she will remain in our hearts, and her legacy will live on. The auditorium at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College campus in Tortola has already been named in her honour, but we need to explore additional avenues to uplift and pay tribute to the late Honourable Parsons. She was truly a cultural ambassador."

Flax-Charles also highlighted Ms Parsons' significant role in promoting tourism, recalling her work with the tourism board and her participation with the heritage dancers. "She helped shape the tourism landscape of the British Virgin Islands, and that is one of the reasons people love to visit. She was genuinely an ambassador."

Ms Eileene L. Parsons, OBE, known as 'Miss P', passed away at the age of 94 on June 22, 2025.

A Special Sitting of the House of Assembly will be held today, July 1, 2025, in honour of the late former legislator and cultural icon.

Rest in peace, Mrs. Parsons. They knew Mrs Parsons was aged. You would think someone would have thought to honor her before she passed away. Why does this place honor the dead instead of honoring them while they are still alive, to show how appreciated they are, so the person can feel good in their heart about their contributions? Find pictures from her early years up until her older years.

Its obvious that you dont live in the BVI. The auditorium at the college was named in her honour many years ago.
