ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Government is expected to forever subsidise the pending National Health Insurance programme. This is according to Deputy Director of the BVI Social Security Board, Mr Roy Barry.

“Government will have to forever subsidise the public facility because of the lack of the ability by the users to contribute when they are [receiving] care,” Barry stated on the Umoja radio show aired on September 13, 2013.

Barry noted that government is required to cover the bulk of health insurance costs for employees going forward as they are the major employer in the Territory.

He also conceded many persons working within the private sector would not be able to afford healthcare.

According to Norma Benjamin, Manager of Referrals and Health Benefits with the NHI, the cost of healthcare often exceeds what is budgeted by government as they are often required to go back for a supplementary.

Host of the programme, Cromwell Smith aka Edju En Ka noted that residents were not paying the true cost of healthcare as beds at Peebles Hospital could cost as little as $25 which amount to 600-700 percent less than the current rate in the region or the rate required to operate a hospital bed.

Speaking on the importance of the pending programme, Barry said the NHI will create access to healthcare for all the residents of the Virgin Islands therefore it is expected that a much more relaxed workforce will be in place.

“Persons will be more eager to work because they have access to that care, they won’t have to neglect work per se because they have a pain and they can’t afford to go to the doctor or they go to work and they can’t perform,” he said.

According to Barry, knowledge of a healthy lifestyle being related to residents will ultimately reduce the cost spent on healthcare in the Territory.

He stated that a huge part of the NHI budget is dedicated to health promotion wherein the aspects of a healthy lifestyle will be promoted on a monthly basis through radio, television and fliers.

I am not totally against the national health insurance because there are many persons who might not be able to afford insurance otherwise. My MAJOR problem with the NHI is the cost to everyone..I heard on the radio where a particular group would pay $24 per month and the rest of us would pay 3.75% of our gross salary per month. That is way tooooo high becuase most of us would still want to continue using our insurance company that we have already becuae the NHI would have some limitations that our regular insurance companies will not have. I do not have a problem if we ALL pay the $24 per month otherwise, not to be selfish, we would be paying the cost of the insurance for the others who are only paying $24 per month. So I hope the government would listen listen listen listen to the people on this issue.......

People have to be wise...when a government starts to dictate what you should do regardless of your views, that is called a DICTATORSHIP FORM OF GOVERNMENT, and the last time I checked, our government was elected under the DEMOCRATIC FORM OF GOVERNMENT....enough said on this matter...

Insurance should be an exact figure, not a percentage.

I support NHI. The lowest earner in a trust company makes twice/three times as much as a cashier at Rite Way. A Permanent Secretary's base salary is four times as much as a custodian. Do we all not have the same expenses monthly, same pains, same illnesses? When Yello or Eggy gets sick, who pays for that? If a child at Rainbow Home gets sick, who pays for that? We the people have to pay for that - same as when a prisoner gets sick. We are paying for it.

All NHI will do, is make us pay for it in a more planned and systematic way. If you make $3000 per month, then your NHI is 112.50 and your local health care coverage is covered. Don't be a moron, if you want additional coverage, pay for it. Instead of you guys look at the way insurance companies rip us off, you belly-aching about something that will benefit the masses. Govt employees are now paying $110 flat per month and still have a $250 deductible. Something has to give and its NHI. Don't bother get vex....get with the programme.

If this NHI is the best thing since slice bread, why is the Government afraid to release the schedule of benefits. What you are not hearing is that a person earning $90,000 will be paying in excess of $ 6,000 annually for substandard coverage. Currently Government employees are paying $220.00 month with a deductible of $250.00 per annum. Why can't we choose what we want?

I think they do need to go back to the drawing board on this NH1, I just had a feel about this I attend some of their community meeting, most questions were not answer to the point. Tell me if I am paying this insurance and never get sick, do I get back my money at the end of the year? I need to know, because that question were not answer directly. I don't know much of the benefits for the people, so I would likes someone who have knowledge and authority to share what we do gain on this insurance.
