Gov't to celebrate the life of Dr Robert A. Mathavious, OBE
Dr Mathavious’ body will lie in repose from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Members of the public will have the opportunity to pay their respect following the viewing of the body by family members and Government officials. All are invited to attend and pay their final respects as the Territory celebrates the life of one of its foremost nation builders.
The official celebration will begin at 4:30 PM, featuring various tributes and musical selections under the theme, “Revered at Home • Respected Abroad • Remembered Forever.”
The family’s celebration of Mr Mathavious’ life will follow on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the Road Town Methodist Church. Viewing will commence at 9:00 AM, followed by the service at 10:30 AM.
Flags to be flown @ half-mast
As a mark of respect, flags will be flown at half-mast across all Government buildings on October 15 and 16.
Dr Mathavious was the former Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the BVI Financial Services Commission. He also served as Financial Secretary in the public service and was an inaugural member of the Integrity Commission.
Widely recognised as a pioneer of the Virgin Islands’ financial services industry, Dr Mathavious played a pivotal role in shaping the Territory’s regulatory framework and global reputation as a respected international financial centre. His vision, leadership, and dedication to excellence have left an enduring legacy that continues to influence the Virgin Islands’ development.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, the Financial Services Institute at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College was renamed the Robert Mathavious Institute for Financial Services in his honour to inspire and equip future generations of financial services professionals.
