VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI– Waste management is being made a focus on the sister islands of Anegada and Virgin Gorda, with a number of Request for Proposals (RFPs) out for waste management and recycling options on the islands.

This was revealed by the Director of Waste Management, Mr Marcus E. Solomon, at an October 5, 2023, Community Meeting regarding waste management plans for the Ninth District.

“With respect to Virgin Gorda, you would have seen an RFP would have gone out, with an attempt to try to treat waste on the Virgin Gorda dumpsite. That RFP is seeking a proposal in the form of having a material recovery facility to deal with all recyclable waste that is produced in Virgin Gorda,” he said.

The plans also include treatment of waste waste produced on Virgin Gorda, according to the director.

“Presently it's dumped on the landfill and that is a health hazard because of many viruses etc. So we are trying to deal with that within the site development plan, a wastewater stabilisation pond.

RFP Closes October 13th

Solomon said the RFP going out closes on October 13, 2023, and the department is hopeful they can get submissions coming out of that.

“With respect to Anegada, we are looking at Anegada with the view of trying to set up a transfer station there, looking at the possibility of using a mobile incinerator to deal with those waste that we cannot recycle,” he added.

Mr Solomon also shared plans to handle derelict vehicles and scrap iron in the VI, along with waste bins and garbage collections, including new bin designs. “So we are hoping in 2024 and even now, you will see some of these initiatives coming on board,” he said.

Following a massive landfill fire on Virgin Gorda in July, residents of Virgin Gorda expressed to the Government of the Virgin Islands that they were not satisfied with the management of the landfill on that island and wished to see improvements.

The BVI needs a comprehensive, long-term solid waste management master plan. This piece mealing approach is temporary at best. The BVI is too small for a long -term,?large earthen land fills. If it is going with earthen landfills, they should be covered with dirt and sealed, containing the methane, green house gases, etc. The solid waste management master plan must include a)maximizing recycling( reduce, recycle, reuse), b) converting thrash into energy, etc.

A master plan is an ambitious action, out of the box thinking. The BVI don’t planning well; they are about quick shirt-term fixes. Planning, planning, planning and more planning and replanning. It cannot be said enough.
